just bought one ... super healthy tank and it looked like a healthy piece ... but not doing so well ... third day here, slumpy off this peice of rock and no polyps, but stil bright yellow????

Just give it time. Its only been 3 days. When i got mine it took almost a week for it to really do anything. They're really picky, so make sure all your params are good. And they like bright lighting. What light do you have over the tank? And how deep is the tank?

its super healthy ten gallon with a 96 watt the coral is really small .. it seems to be working itself off the rock it came on ... i hope to have pics tonite ... why are they so picky? i love them soo much and have always wanted one ... what do u mean 'do anything'? like open up? stand up even? thanks for ur reply ...

ya it took mine a while to open, stand up, and all that jazz. As for why they're picky...who knows...why are some sps corals really hard to keep??

They are a very nice coral though. Too bad i'm getting out of the hobby soon..someones coming to pick up my fiji yellow tomorrow :(

3 days and it shrivvelled up and died .... i haven't put a single coral in this tank for seven months and on that occasion seven months ago i put about eleven frags ... all have lived and grown ... DO YOU THINK THIS IS MY FAULT OR SHOULD I COMPLAIN TO THE LFS ... 3 DAYS .... I'M DEVASTATED ...

Posting here too because I got a nice large yellow fiji from a local buddy and it looked incredibly good the first 2 days. But now it is covered with some brown stuff (die off? Diatoms?) it's under 440w VHO only 1 foot below surface. Could it be my nutrient load is too high? Anyone know much about what these leathers require or what could possibly kill them off?

teremei-- Its impossible to tell without knowing any of the parameters...Nitrates, pH, SG, etc...

pheremo--that really sucks :( There had to be something with the water that it didnt like. How long did you acclimate it? I let mine go for about an hour before going in the tank.

What are all your params as well??

Sorry I hate hearing that "it's impossible to tell", if course it's not impossible to tell. There's someone out there that knows what parameters are likely to kill off a yellow fiji, but not other leathers, SPS, clams, ECT. .

Like for instance, high nitrates, Low calcium, low PH, High Alk, High Temps, ect. .

My params are . .

temp 81.5 (right now because of the weather it fluxes from 80.0 to 82 during 24 hours)

PH: 8.12
Alk: no tester yet
Calcium: 550
Nitrate: 35
Trite: 0
Amonia: 0
SG: 1.026

What else? Yeah it's weird for me too, super extended and LARGe one day. Shrivled and got brown gunk growing on it the next.

Teremei, it looks like your nitrates and calcium are both too high. Leathers are sensitive to Alk., so get a test as soon as you can.

ok what should my DKH or whatever be? And I'll test it. And I have what I need to drip limewater but what would I need to use to lower alk a little?

what kind of alk? High or low?

Can anyone tell me what 3.5 meq/L means in alk?

Also I ran a fasttest which is better than the strip I used and it says my nitrates are around 10 at most. Which makes more sense because I have a DSB and run a denitrifier. I will retest calcium. Someone help me figure out if I have high alk, or low alk. Because I want to fix it before I start dripping limewater.

Thanks for that. Hmm that is funny. Is it possible it got stung (which based on original location is possible) so bad that it really got hurt beyond the point of recovery?

It really depends on what stung it. Some LPS are more than capable of killing leaters, as are some sps. Other softies usually can't sting each other, but chemical warfare is a possibility.

My guess would be intense lighting that the figi wasn't use to. The one i just got looked good on the first day, but after that it looked like crap. After moving it lower in the tank yesterday it's begining to perk up.

Matt

It doesn't just look "sick". It literally looks melting man. I don't think this thing is going to perk up. It's gonna die.
