On 3/17, I picked up a Fiji Yellow Leather. I've been waiting for one for a really long time and had the spot all ready for it to go and everything. Shortly after I put it in my tank I noticed a little brown spot on one of the edges, it seemed to blow right off with a turkey baster and I didn't think much else of it. A few days later the spot came back, again I blew it off with the turkey baster and left it alone. Now the spot has gotten a little bigger, and it seems obvious that it may be rotting in that one place. The rest of the coral looks healthy, it still hasn't fully opened up, but every day when the lights come on, some of the polyps start to raise up. The coral itself is placed at the top of the tank and has good current sweeping over and around it. What can or should I do about the brown spot? My instinct is thinking to cut that piece off, but will that really help save the rest? I'll work on getting a picture to add to this thread.
All of my test parameters are in ideal ranges, except suddenly I have been battling a nitrate issue, or so I thought... When I put this guy in my tank my test readings were 0 for nitrates. After about a week, the test reading was 5ppm, about another week had gone by, and the reading shot up to 20 (according the the 2 year old API test kit) - so of course I panicked and began 25g water changes. After 2 of those, I got the nitrates to 10, which according to the new Saliferts test kit I got today is really 5. So to be honest, I'm not sure I really had 20ppm of Nitrates in the tank or not, but it could be. Doing large water changes and cutting back on feeding to see if that resolves the issue. Since January when I moved this tank I haven't had a trace of nitrates until now.
