Yellow Fiji Leather with brown spot

On 3/17, I picked up a Fiji Yellow Leather. I've been waiting for one for a really long time and had the spot all ready for it to go and everything. Shortly after I put it in my tank I noticed a little brown spot on one of the edges, it seemed to blow right off with a turkey baster and I didn't think much else of it. A few days later the spot came back, again I blew it off with the turkey baster and left it alone. Now the spot has gotten a little bigger, and it seems obvious that it may be rotting in that one place. The rest of the coral looks healthy, it still hasn't fully opened up, but every day when the lights come on, some of the polyps start to raise up. The coral itself is placed at the top of the tank and has good current sweeping over and around it. What can or should I do about the brown spot? My instinct is thinking to cut that piece off, but will that really help save the rest? I'll work on getting a picture to add to this thread.

All of my test parameters are in ideal ranges, except suddenly I have been battling a nitrate issue, or so I thought... When I put this guy in my tank my test readings were 0 for nitrates. After about a week, the test reading was 5ppm, about another week had gone by, and the reading shot up to 20 (according the the 2 year old API test kit) - so of course I panicked and began 25g water changes. After 2 of those, I got the nitrates to 10, which according to the new Saliferts test kit I got today is really 5. So to be honest, I'm not sure I really had 20ppm of Nitrates in the tank or not, but it could be. Doing large water changes and cutting back on feeding to see if that resolves the issue. Since January when I moved this tank I haven't had a trace of nitrates until now.

As promised, here are some pics. Also, I have 2 - 250w MH lights, so plenty of light on this one. I think it's still just acclimating.

Make sure it has good flow and good lighting. They come from shallow reefs and like turbid water.

Thanks, as I mentioned, the leather is at the top of the tank under 2-250w MH lights. I have rotating water deflectors on the out put into the tank which circulate around the leather and do sweep over the surface of the leather. What can or should I do about the brown spot? Should I cut it off, will this help?

I would refrain from cutting it off, unless it continues to spread. It appears to be isolated. See how it progresses. I tend to be cautious about cutting into leathers. Others may disagree. Personally, I feel the risk of infection to the organism outweighs the benefit. I would estimate this piece/section may recede, but the organism as a whole will flourish. Much better than slicing and dicing, so to speak. Leathers are extremely resilient, as far as corals go.

I've noticed that for some reason the yellow fiji toadstool leathers are more susceptible to tissue necrosis than regular leather corals. I've seen this happen alot with them and they usually end up dissolving away into nothing :hmm2:

hopefully this doesn't happen with your particular specimen, keep an eye on it and let us know how it does
