Yellow Head Jawfish

Could anyone tell me about Yellow Head Jawfish. I will be getting a 29 gallon biocube and a bunch of corals. I first going to start off with some soft corals.

They need deep sand, at least 5 inches. I wouldn't suggest one for a tank that size. If you like how they look, try a watchman goby and a pistol shrimp instead. Watchman gobies resemble jawfish.

An individual or a pair will do well in that size tank. Though they are more social than other species of jawfish I have found they will squabble in too small of quarters.

2" of sand depth will suffice as they will build their burrow horizontally if need be. Just provide some small rubble they can use as building material. Beware of corals on the sandbed as they may get buried in their burrow building and small frags may be used as building material.

Make sure the tank is covered as hey are jumpers when startled, particularly the first few nights before the burrow is completed..

+1 to the above

I have kept them before. They will make the sand as deep as they need. I had one in a 25 cube and he did great. Very entertaining fish.

Be careful with tank mates. They stress out easily. In a nice peaceful tank they do great!

I like using Caribsea Super Reef for substrate. Just make sure your rocks are on the glass and fill in with substrate.

Make sure your rock is sitting on the floor of your tankif they burrow under rock, they can make it shoft and fall on themselves. Aside from that I have kept on in a 30g with about 2-3" of sand for a couple of years.

I usually suggest to people to use at least 6 in. of sand, but 4 will probably suffice. No matter how much sand you use, it is critically important you use many different grains of sand. Use equal parts fine, coarse, and anything in between. if anything use less fine sand. Your jawfish will not be able to make a good burrow if you use only fine sand.

I would also make sure it's the first fish added to your tank. It should settle in quicker if it's in first & can make a burrow in peace instead of worrying about what other fish are doing.
