Yellow Tang appears to be bleeding

This is a photo of a yellow tang that I have had for about 8 months. He is in a reef tank that I have added nothing - rock, coral or fish for the last 4 months.

Yesterday a.m. he appeared to be internally bleeding around the fins top and bottom, this is a photo that I snapped last night. There is no sign of any type of injury and the redness is spread, not a single source and it is on top and bottom.

Any ideas?

I've seen something like this a few times on YTs and it always disappeared in a couple of days. As you noted, internal bleeding wouldn't make much sense; given the pattern. How's his appetite 7 behavior/ fish with internal bleeding seldom act normally. YTs seem to come down with lots of odd reddish and whitish stuff at times. All this drivel isn't an answer, but unless it gets worse, I'd expect it to go away.

It is fat, eating and seems to be doing fine. The YT is the boss of the tank. It was darting around more than normal so a photo was tough.

I did notice that the hippo tang and a flame angel were testing it a bit yesterday, normally they just get out of the way when it bullies them but yesterday they were sort of holding their ground as if they knew it was weaker than normal.

I had a Yellow tang in a QT tank for 8 weeks while my display ran fallow. After about the sixth week the tang looked like yours. When I moved him back to the display it was gone and back to normal in 3 days.

Now two months later he is fat, happy and bright yellow. I think it is a water quality issue, possibly brought on by the sterile and unnatural setting of the bare QT. IMHO

I wouldn't worry too much if it is eating and its a temp holding tank.
