Hi,

I found my yellow tang covered with black dots all over his body. I took him out and put him in QT. It is eating and active but still have the spots, is there medication I should add? Or leave the fish alone and let it fight off the disease on tis own?

"Tangs are susceptible to a number of different parasitic nd bacterial infections. One of the most notorious tang parasites is black spot or yellow tang disease. This is a turbellarian flatworm in the genus Paravortex which shows up as pinhead sized black spots on the body and fins of light colored fish, but is inconspicuous on darker species. Symptoms of this infection include reddend skin, listlessness, chafing against the substrate, color loss, and rapid breathing. This flatworm remains on the host for about six days, drops off onto the substrate, and five days later the body wall of the adult ruptures, releasing up to 160 young worms (Kent 1981). Recommended treatments include giving the infected fish three 1 hour formalin bathsover a weeks time, treating the tank with formalin or Dylox, and lowering the specific gravity to 1.014 for 3 days to four weeks (Blasiola 1976; Kent and Olsn 1986; SeaScope 1987; Moe 1992). "

When I first got my Yellow tang it was covered with black spots and read up on it and it is Paravortex and not too lethal. I just fed my tang and kept an eye on it and after about three weeks the black spots disappeared and I have not seen any on him in more than a year. Also, a lot of times paravortex is species specific and will not affect other fish and this seemed to be the case with my fish as well.
