Yellow Wrasse Laying On Side

I've had this great fish for about two weeks now. After his initial acclimation, he's been doing great. Swimming around all day doing his thing, off to bed around dusk then up and back to it first thing in the morning. Today he started laying on his side in the sand. He kind of half buries himself so I can see a fair amount of him. He'll be in one spot for an hour or so, then I'll find him in another spot (again on his side). He makes no effort to fully bury himself and seems like he's lethargic when I do see him get up (only to move to another spot to lay down). Is this usual behavior from time to time or should I be concerned?

Thanks,

A couple of days is ok? Everytime I see a wrasse acting funny laying on the sand, something is wrong especially if he's breathing heavy.
No this is not normal behavior

Yellow Wrasse are known for burying themselves under the sand to sleep for protection, however as stated above if breathing heavy most likely something wrong, keep us posted

Thanks all for the feedback. He doesn't seem to be breathing heavy. Will keep you updated later today with further observations.

Here's some further info...

-Have had him for two weeks and he's been fine until yesterday.

-No QT, unfortunately I don't have space for one. When I get a larger tank some day in a larger house I will definitely have a QT.

-Sand bed is roughly 2"

-He completely buried himself last night and hasn't come out since.

I'm worried because he's now missed yesterday and today's feedings (feed once a day in the morning).

Thanks,

Well...he's dead...very unfortunate :( Just found him at the back of the tank with my scarlett's all over him. Would love to get another one but I have no idea why he died and wouldn't want to do the same to a new one. My other fish all appear to be doing just fine.

I had a blue spot for over a year , and then one day..... laying on the sand breathing heavy.
It's happened to a friend of mine also after being well established in the system... so who knows.
Always dead the next day

Thanks Heath. Do you think I should wait until my tank is a bit more mature before getting another? I was thinking maybe there wasn't enough stuff on the rock and coral for him to pick at to eat throughout the day?

I would try again, there was something wrong with that particular fish. I like to get all my wrasse on pellets..... but they have to be from Ocean nutrition, again this is just me

Ok, I was feeding frozen dipped in Selcon and garlic. He seemed to be eating well at feeding time. Maybe I'll try pellets the next time.

sorry to hear that... I had one for 2 years that didn't make the second move.... he was a really great fish but stressed out over everything even siphoning water from tank... he almost died the first move as well but pulled through... they are really good looking fish especially the males once they get older, should try again sometime =)

OK, thanks. I'm gonna wait for this diatom bloom to pass before stocking anything else but I will try again. Also want to get a mystery wrasse eventually.

I have a yellow corris wrasse aswell one of the reasons I think I have success with her was I had so many pods to munch on. I have noticed these wrasse in particular are very skittish. for the first few weeks she never really openly ate what I was feeding and hid whenever someone was in the room. I have a strong feeling these fish are WC even my lfs confessed they really do not like ordering them as the batch I had got mine all passed. (feel bad they ordered extras when I placed my order)
