Just found out I have hydroid jellyfish in my seahorse tank? I know they can be harmful to the horses. How can I get rid of them? The tank is not large and I can pull it apart if necessary.

Please advise before I freak out. Tons of the little buggers on the glass.

Thanks - Laurie

Are you feeding newly hatched brine shrimp to your seahorses? I had an outbreak of these when I fed a lot of brine shrimp, --every day---so I stopped feeding the brine shrimp (I feed frozen mysis) and they went away. BTW, its my understanding that they are only harmful to baby seahorses or dwarf seahorses...but they are nasty little things, aren't they?

Hi Cathy,

No, I'm feeding Piscine Energetics mysis. But I did put in a lot of grasses and stuff a few weeks ago. They might have hitchhiked in on that. They are nasty looking but as long as they don't hurt my girls I won't worry so much. I might just scrape the glass and suck them up with a baster. I've seen a couple of flatworms, too, so I have a feeling I'm going to be doing a breakdown, clean-up, and restart soon. Grrrr!

Well, I"m not sure breaking down the tank will get rid of all of them but maybe most of them. I got the idea that they came in on the brine shrimp eggs, and were also eating the shrimp--so yours have to be feeding on something if they are prolific in your tank. Eliminate their food source and you will eliminate them eventually. As for the flatworms, I have used Flatworm Exit in a reef, BUT I'm not sure it's safe for seahorses. You will need to ask someone more knowledgeable about that. Good luck!
