So we all know you can grow an acropora, a hammer coral, even raise fry. You've proven yourself to be a great phytoplankton culturer. So, how do your plants do? Do you neglet them? I wanted to share a few plants I keep around the house to maintain the necessary oxygen levels I crave.
Now, I would like to say I'm pretty good at longevity, but I don't know any plant names, so don't ask what's what. I took them outside today to wash them off of all the winter dust, since the weather is in the 80s. They will look even better in a few months now that the sun is pouring into the windows for the summer. I tend to water my plants about every two weeks, using miracle grow and tap water. I do try to remember to do it more often, but I'm just being honest.
I would like to start with this plant. I got it in 2002 as a gift from my mother when I survived emergency surgery for peritonitis. My appendix had ruptered 5 days earlier, and all my internal organs were inflamed. It could have killed me apparently. There are a couple of threads about it here on RC.
I've had this ivy for over 9 years. A couple of years ago, I enlisted help to untangle all its vines, stretching them out and then wrapping them around and around and around a tee-pee-like frame. It looked like an ivy Christmas tree. With one of the surround sound speakers hidden within, it lives in the living room. The vines were close to 120' long total length, with the plant in the center of the house during the unravelling.
As it keeps growing, the vines hang downward like a leafy skirt. I don't know if I'll cut those off or not.
Here's the baby, definitely in need of repotting. A medium sized one is to the left, not really pictured.
Now here's the point of this thread. I got this large leafed plant at Home Depot about 7 years ago. It was one of those plants in a 10" pot that stood about 16" tall. Over time, it grew taller and taller, shedding leaves as it headed for the ceiling. Finally it hit the 8' ceiling, and then bent to grow out new leaves. This bugged me, but it did help hold it up somewhat. Since the leaves were all up high, it was a tall stalk that looked like bamboo, and pretty boring at that.
I cut off the top leaves month after month, and new ones would come out again and again. What bothered me most was I had a large pot of dirt and a 'stick' with 10 leaves at the top. One nursery told me to cut off the top two feet, and new ones would come up out of the soil. Thinking that would be nice, I did as he said. It was cut off, and I put the top section in a glass, in case it grew roots. It had 4 leaves perhaps. Indeed, it did grow and now I have a glass full of roots and nine leaves.
Back to last year, when I cut off the top, I was worried the plant would bleed from the sore, so I covered it with saran wrap and a rubber band. In the meantime, a small growth burst out the side of the main stalk, and has been growing leaves for months. PLUS a new branch actually did come up from out of the soil, again growing a new mass of leaves. You can see all of this two pictures up. But look what has happened over the past three weeks!
Yes, that is correct. A new branch pushed itself right out of the saran wrap, and a new leaf is now unfurling. If I'd not seen it myself, I wouldn't have believed it.
So, if you've been caring for plants for a long time, why not share them with us so we can see them as well? Maybe you have an interesting story to share, also.![Smile :) :)](https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/joypixels/assets/8.0/png/unicode/64/1f642.png)
