If you were designing a reefing related website... what features would you like to have on it....

Just looking for ideas....posted over at robs messageboards...but didn't get any reponses...

I've visited a lot of reef websites and I know I always have to check out their equipment pages.
I've seen some real good sites with a lot of info on it and alot of pics. I've also seen a lot of dumb sites, like mine. Go ahead and click on it. I don't think they get as boring as it.
I'll have to weed through some of my favorites and send the links to you. Some of them are really high tech.

I like to be able to click on the pictures and enlarge them to see detail and the colors need to be true not altered. I also love it when they tell you what the item eats, what light requirements and flow requirements it has and also if it is territorial or passive. Fish compatability charts also come in handy. For equipment it needs to explain what size tank it is for and what other equipment is necessary to run it. It is nice when they have the corals organized into there similar species so you can skip stuff your not interested in.
Gosh I am not trying to be picky but I guess I am,

I would like to see products and live stock cross referenced by members. So if I need information on calcium reactors, I can find out who is using them.

Now THAT would be a very useful tool! Not sure about the ease of setting it up or maintaining the info, but it would be extremely beneficial IMO.

You'd basically have to have a database of items of interest...then have checkboxes for users to check in their profile.

If they check it..they'd come up in a search for a member with that.

I still haven't decided how I'm going to do the backend of the site...I was thinking of using a content managment system..but most of them are in PHP...was hoping to find a python one... but I'll keep this in mind as a feature :)

I'm going to work on doing the site in my free time ( don't have much...so it will take a while to get done) ... so maybe I'll roll out a simple version...then add features to it as I go...not sure...

What about a feature where a person could submit information for a coral/fish/invert ... for addition to the site... so it could basically have a list of a ton of things.....and some would say.... 'we have no information on this topic... if you do... click here to tell us about it' ?

That would be nice although you may get very different experiences from people. For instance, xenia-
I cant seem to kill it even with chemical let alone stop it from spreading. Other people cant grow it to save their life so it would end up being sort of like a rate this coral thing.
Another thing that would be helpful is members posting SPS and LPS successful tips.
I want to know if a person who uses just a drip kalk method fares as well as a dual calcium reactor user. Possibly some members have tried both and could comment the negatives and the positives about each approach.

Well, I've started building out my site... I'm currently working on the retailers page...which I would like to put links to any small time coral/fish/etc retailers on the web.... if anyone has any good links...pls send em to me in a PM or post a reply...

Here are the ones I have already...

Thanks for your help.

Great start czieler. Looks like another favorite site to visit and get some good info from.
Not to go off subject, but has anyone been able to reinstate the club website?
I see that your going to have a sign-in. Is there going to be an area to post pics?
Keep up the good work and I'll be watching as it progresses.

Yeah...I'm not sure what all I'm going to do behind the login as of yet...but at a minimum...I'm going to do message boards and photo galleries.

LOL... I haven't gotten that far yet... I still have to create the database. I've just done the beginner FAQ and the retailers section.

Most of my free time this week was spent dealing with Animal Control... and finding Sheila a home...but Ikaria (Dwight) has her now...dropped her off last nite....they struck me as real animal lovers like myself..so I know she'll fit in there.

Anyways..back on topic. I hope to get the site along pretty quickly...once I get registration ... and the forums up...I'll let you guys know.

Oh...the emperor angel... photoshop is great! I can't remember where I got the pic of the fish..but I used photoshop to pull him out of his surroundings...then paste him in this picture :)
