Your experience with epoxies

I have been using aquamend epoxy from the hd since I started mounting frags in my tank. Now I have the opportunity to try aquastik (thanks atlantis!). I can see the pros and cons of each, but as for me, I will stick to using aquamend.

Aquamend pros:

Alot Cheaper, doesn't make my skimmer go nuts. It doesn't heat up while it is setting. Stays pliable so I can mix as much as I need all at once and take my time mounting frags.

Aquamend cons:

Stinks :) , stays soft for about half an hour, and hardens to a nice bright white that sticks out in my tank (untill coralline covers it).

Aquastik pros:

Comes in a pink that blends a little better than aquamend, hardens quickly, and stick very hard.

Aquastik cons:

Is very expensive for a small tube. A small amount will make a skimmer freak out. Heats up as it hardens (I am talking almost pain level heat). Hardens almost too quickly.

Please let me know what you guys use. I know most use superglue gel. It would be nice if superglue would work for me, but my turbo snails take it as a personal offense if they see a frag attached with superglue alone.

I use hobby glue (super glue) xtra thick gel. I keep in in the freezer. Kept in the freezer makes it even thicker. I used the aquastik for the first time last week. Used in small amounts, I didn't notice my skimmer doing the freak out. I only used it on 3 frags. IMO, use what works for you & want you're comfortable using.

I use WITC brand epoxy

I use WITC brand epoxy

WITC "whatever is the cheapest" Wal Mart is a good place to look for it.

we use gel super glue, loctite has worked the best, and an epoxy we got from robs, i don't know the name of it.

I didn't use more than a marble size amount of aquastik, then the skimmer went nuts for a couple hours. I read on the intructions afterwards that they recommend you turn off your skimmer for 24 hours after useing. The skimmer going nuts for me may be attributed to the smaller water volume in my tank versus your Monster :) The skimmer thing doesn't really worry me, but the heat thing, yikes!

I will try keeping superglue in the freezer. Thanks for the tip!

I have found if you get the glue at a hobby shop, in bottle form, you end up paying about the same as a double pack of s/g @ wally world, etc. If you've ever noticed the tubes are half full. What we use is called Maxi-Cure, Extra Thick. it sets in 10 - 25 secs. A little longer underwater. Most of the local hobby stores carry it.

After this weekend where I have used both, Aquamend has my vote.

Nic is right, loctite is the best if you need a small amout. Hobbytown.com and you can a lot more.

I go through loctite pretty quickly.. I try to keep at least two tubes of the loctite gel and one aquamend epoxy stick in my supply drawer.

My mounting is as follows frag-superglue-epoxy-superglue-fragmount or plug.

Nik,
The epoxy we carry is Holdfast, by Aquarium Systems. I like it if I have a bunch of SPS to mount, and don't want to worry about stuff falling off.

I always use the gel/ get it at CVC Phar. Never fails and works like a champ for my zoos, softies you name it.

linn posting: too lazy too log in, lol

Do you mean the cvs brand gel superglue? We had used it a couple times and sometimes it isn't gel at all. Maybe we should try the freezer trick...
are we supposed to store it in there?

Linn

linn,

Yes Thats the Gel. and yes I use the freezer trick. For me it work awesome. I have fragged toadstool, blastos, zoos, shrooms and zoos with it. Heck its cheap too:)
