YWG questions..

I am researching my next fish purchase for my 40b future reef tank. No coral yet as the tank is too young. I currently have a black onyx Clownfish. Next I plan on adding either a tailspot blenny or a goby.

I have had a daimond goby in the past which I absolutely loved but I do not want to deal with a goby throwing sand all over my corals close to the bottom or on the sand bed. One goby I saw at my local fish store was a yellow Watchman goby so I started doing the research on them. I know pairing them up with a shrimp is a really cool thing to watch but I have had a tiger pistol shrimp in the past and I'm pretty sure he was the cause of a lot of death in my tank. I guess my question is what would be the best goby? And is the yellow Watchman goby even that active in a tank or will I put him in there and never see him again.

Well they max out at about 1 to 1.5 inches so not near the threat a 3" tiger pistol.

I've read lots of threads with a tiger getting big and killing fish. I've never read of a candy pistol doing it. But I imagine if a really small fish happened by it would.

They are more amphipod hunters at that size. I've not seen any really large Randalli's but supposedly they can get to be close to 2". They also aren't as beefy as the tigers.

Shrimp Gobies tend to be more outgoing and more visible without a Pistol Shrimp partner. Once they partner up, they will seldom leave their burrow and how often you see them will depend on how visible their burrow is. You might get lucky and they'll build their burrow right in the front and center of your tank. Or they might build their burrow in the back between rubble piles where you'll never see them.

I don't think it's very common at all for Tiger Pistols to kill healthy fish. They're likely to harass snails, hermits and smaller shrimp, though. Randall's Pistols are much better behaved, but also tend to be more cryptic.

If you're going to go with the Randall's Pistol, I suggest partnering them with a Yasha or Hi-fin Red Banded Goby. Those Gobies are more size-appropriate for a Randall's Pistol than a YWG.

Awesome info. Thank you. Im really leaning toward not getting the shrimp. I like cleaner shrimp and the blood red shrimp. I dont want to have to worry about a small shrimp I barely see killing all my CuC in the middle of the night.

My tiger never purposely hunts my CUC, but I'm pretty sure he's killed a few that invaded the burrow. Specifically nasarrius snails. they have a bad habit of trying to go into his hole when he take a pellet down.

My watchman goby was 'lost' before I got him the tiger. When I bought him I originally bought a candy cane pistol with him, but the LFS kept them seperate so they were not bonded. The lady who bagged them did so together.....

The goby killed the pistol while dripping. ;/ I was ****ed.

After that, when he went in the tank, he would constnatly swim up and down the corners all day every day, wouldn't sleep in the rocks, just laid out next to the glass like he was trying to get out. I have a glass top and I'm POSITIVE he would be carpet food if I didn't.

As *SOON* as I put the tiger in, they bonded. The tiger started digging a burrow and they have been inseparable little *******s ever since. Now, both of mine are Juvies, but I'm fairly sure at this point that when a YWG is young they actively seek a pistol to pair with, it almost seemed instinctual how he refused to go into the rock and did nothing but try to swim out of my tank non-stop.
