Hey guys this is my first post on this great forum so i hope that it is okay. :fun2: Anyway i am looking to spawn a pair of designer clownfish!!!! I am looking to purchase a mated pair of designer clowns but they can be fairly expensive. Does anyone know where i could get a good deal on mated pair of designers? My plan is to have 3 tanks 1 for the breeders, 1 for the baby's and 1 for the juveniles. Comment away, thanks and happy new year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

imo, you will need more tanks then that. IMO/IME i would not combine batches of juvi's till they are 30 days old. my clowns lay eggs on a average of every 12-15 days. and from the day they are layed to the day they hatch is around 7-8 days. so you will average 2 batches per month, maybe 3. mated pairs are a little $$$. good luck

thanks, so there really is no way to get mated pairs cheaper

nope, unless you come across someone breaking down their system or just trying to sell a pair off. buy 2 juvi's one bigger then the other and watch them grow. or spend the money and fast forward the process and get a mated pair and wait and see. there is not a guarantee they will spawn soon after you get them. one of my pair quit spawning for 8 months .

are wild caught or tank bred clowns better for spawning?

the more species we breed in our tanks, is less we take from the ocean. but the things to look for are defects (bulldog face, flared gill plates and so on) in the pair you wish to breed. i personally don't want to get two clowns from the same batch or parents and breed them. i would find a way to mix it up if possible, but that is just me.

my plan is to pair a black onyx and a picaso inmy 20 long and move them to a breeding tank in 6 months what do you think?

There are other sites that are all about breeding marine life. A quick search should point you in their direction.

If you spend $400 more on a pair of fish that are breeding, you can make that back fairly quickly. That is a lot of money though. $400 / $7 (what I get for ocellaris) is 58 fish. So, if I bought a pair of ocellaris clowns, I would have to sell 58 of them to pay for them (plus a few for food, salt, etc). With designer fish, they'll sell for more, but you won't move them in the same volume.

I suggest buying a pair of ocellaris and breeding them to get the hang of it. Raise a few batches and get good at it. Then sell the pair and buy a breeding pair of designers if you really want. Make sure not to buy an old pair though. You want the pair to be fairly young.
