zoa growth

well , more like growth on zoas.

I really do appreciate the help I receive here and have done my best to reciprocate.

Here begins the tale... A couple of frags donated by a friend were looking great. Then I started to notice that some of the zoas stopped opening all the way. It was recommended to dip them in a tank water/iodine mix for 5 minutes. I not only had my water checked at the LFS but bought a test kit and all results were either "perfect" or slightly above. Nitrate was the only one higher and it was only at 20.

I'll wait to see what the dip fixes but here's the question for today:

on one frag, I found a bright yellow material that looks like a sponge. It is between the polyps and under the rock base. That part of the base was suspended and not in contact with sand or other rock.

It has a "foamy" appearing texture. So I am assuming what looks like a sponge, acts like a sponge might possibly be a sponge ...

Opinions ?

Pictures speak 1000 words.

I knew that was coming... That's why you get the big bucks right ? ha ha

They should post here.

Id be more concerned with those dark crusty looking polyps, you should be able to pick the sponge out of there easy enough so it doesnt overgrow the zoos, but those zoas may have some type of fungus possibly even zoa pox, a closer pic of a polyp might help.

I had just dipped the zoas in iodine. That caused them to close up. I will post some better pictures of the polyps as soon as I can.

THANKS for the help !

yes that seems to be a sponge.... i have seen various colors of sponges like that... it will begin to creep over the zoa mat but you should be able to chip it off with tweezers or even your nail. :frog:

I'll try that this weekend. THANKS !

One zoa has not re-opened since the iodine dip. That was ...three days ago. Others have opened back up. Eevn the one with the sponge is doing better.

Another aquarium mystery
