Zoanthids Stayong Closed for Prolonged Period of Time

Please advise. My Zoanthids are staying closed for prolonged periods of time. I did notice that I have one or two small green Nudibrances in my tank and I see that they are Zoanthid preditors.

Do I need to take some radical action ? or just remove the nudibranch from my tank and see what happens ? I can always feed them to the nasy fishies in my Fish Only Tank !

Please advise. I prefer not to do dips if I don't need to..

Definitely going to have to remove all the nudis which may take a few late nights with a flashlight as they tend to be most active then. I'd also highly recommend doing a dip on all your zoas and checking for nudi egg sacs. The dip that has worked best for me with the least stress to my zoas was using a concentrated lugols mixed with tank water. I dipped them for about 5 mintues and that seemed to do the trick. The other thing I'd recommend is trying a banana (sometimes called canary) wrasse as the two I had did a great job of consuming nudis. Best of luck and keep us posted!

what is Lugols ? and how much of it do I mix with my tank water for the purpposes of the dip ?

Can anyonee show me what a Nudi egg-sack looks like ?

Thanks for the help !

help ! Can anyone tell me what Luois is ? What do I dip the Zoos in ?

Also I noticed that ym Nudis are a bright orange.. the ones I saw on the web as Zoo-eating were gray or green. Do they take on the color of the zoos they eat ? Because my zoos are bright orange...

Thanks,
Allen

Some do take on the color of the zoanthids. Check out the sticky at the top of this forum for the FW dip procedure. Lugols is iodine made by Kents most LFS will carry it. You can save yourself some money and buy some tincture iodine from your local drugstore. If you do a SW iodine dip, I use 40 drops of tincture to a gallon of SW. I leave them in there for about 10min and the blast with a powerhead and then swish them back and forth. Best of luck with them!

thank you...

once i pick any nudi's that i see out of the tank and dip my zoos, what are the odds that I got them all.. or at least have them under control ? Is this a futile battle or one easily won ?

You will have to do it a few times. I did it about 4-5 days between each dip. The eggs look like this @ except white clear color. Look at each and every polyp and if you find an egg sac remove it with some tweezers. I had to deal with these buggers about nine months ago and I have not had any problems since doing the FW and SW iodine dip. You might want to consider a QT tank so it does not happen agian and best of luck getting rid of them!

so let me make sure I understand. I need to do a frsh water dip and then a saltwater dip with Iodine ?

I would do a FW dip with iodine first, but that is just me. The SW dip is a little less stressful on the polyps but you dont get to see the nudis implode and you might not get them all, like a FW dip. You could do both a few days apart

ok.. thanks.. not I will ring you up on reefcentral if I have any questions when I do it this weekend.

Thank you !
