It kind of depends on the sponge. Just as an example, if it was a black pineapple sponge the zoanthids would most likely grow around it, but if it's an encrusting sponge then it will probably smother the zoanthids over time. If you haven't already, your best bet is to just remove the sponge with your finger nails, some tweezers or perhaps a stiff brush right before a water change. GL.
