First tank, first zoas so I'm not sure if this is normal. I purchased this small zoa frag on Monday. This morning, it appeared that while the zoas were closed, there was what looked like a white ring? It's a new piece to me but from what I remember it was more of a purple color... The pics didnt come out great, but it was the best I could get.

they look like a form of people eaters and the white ring you are seeing is completely normal. that is one of the ways to ID a people eater polyp. if they stay closed for awhile then that is not normal and you should start doing some testing of your water and try to find a happy spot for the polyps. some more information about your tank would help everybody, help you.

Agreed, test your water. The chemistry of the aquarium this frag came from might be extremely different than yours. That can cause this coral to stay closed up for a while.
Yet, if your tank is healthy and your parameters are in check, this coral should bounce back in no time. Specifically look for parameters that can swing or shift from day to night. (Temp, pH) Also, make sure your salinity is at an acceptable level. Too often that parameter is overlooked. On top of that, it's not uncommon for an LFS to have their holding tanks at a very low salinity. Without slow acclimation the corals will stay closed for a while.
Post parameter!
Cheers
