Zoas that look great w/o a ton of actinic lights?

I'm about to set up a 20 gallon and was thinking about making it a zoa / paly dominated reef. I like actinics, but I don't like blue sand/rocks. So, are there zoas/ palys that have amazing colors without tons of actinics?

Tubbs, magicians, candy apple reds, nightmares are a few that come to mind. All look great in any light IMO.

I think they all look nice under regular lighting. If you have good water quality, you should have nice colors. However, I would recommend one blue bulb so you get that part of the light wavelenth over your corals for good growth.

kershak, those are gorgeous! Where did you find them?

mallorieGgator, yeah I was gonna have one or two blue bulbs...but I have some zoas ( forgot the name...they are green) that don't "shine" unless I put them right under the blues. The neon look that some peoples' tanks have is pretty...but I like the natural look more.

Do certain colors shine more? Or does it depend on the type of zoa?

Agreed. Pure blue lighting is not a requirement for zoa's to look good. A good bulb or set of blubs with a little actinic mix thrown in will promote not only good growth, but great color (combined with good parameters of course).

Bring your camera to the store and take a picture with flash. The bright white will overpower the actinics, giving the polyps a better representation of what they will look like in your tank. Forget the brand names and choose according to your preference.

OK, thanks a bunch guys!

TampaSnooker, well...I would, but I doubt I'll be shopping at a lfs for zoas. There's not much for variety around here. And the zoas they do carry are crazy expensive that don't look all that special...

My experience...green varieties look best without the help of actinics.

I agree. These green ones pop under my royal blue leds.

I am doing a 90 gallon with Zoas and Ricordia in mind specifically and have ordered quite a few from online sources. The experiences have been great as far as condition of the zoas, but most of the blues that I have ordered have looked pretty lame under my 10k bulbs. Look for zoas that have tons of contrast in color instead of just a single cool color.unless the color is red or orange. Many of the red/orange/yellow zoas that they show on the net actually look better under the white light than they do in their pictures which are under lots of blue light. One of my best ones right now were called Lemon Drops and they are a bright full yellow center, with dark brown skirt--amazing in person.

What are those called??

Are red/yellow and orange zoas rare? I can't seem to find any...

I haven't named them yet but I'm thinking of calling them "Aaron's toxic waste". I need to get a better picture of them first so that you can actually see how sic they look.:spin1:
