Hello all,
My zooanthids are not thriving. I have them In a 55g tank with more then enough live rock however i feel its ultimately my marineland LED lights that are secretly the culprit. The zooads are doing good as far as sustaining however, like i said not thriving. My chemicals are doing good. Ph is 7.9 temp of the tank is sitting pretty at 76.8 and nothing. any recommendations out there?

Alright people out there i just ordered a metal halide to add to my led hoping that provides results will post pics on wednesday! Thanx to all who sent private messages to help me...

hi ,

for the most part the amount of liverock you have has nothing or very little to do with keeping zoanthids, the liverock address the waer qulity issue.

your lights could be a factor as well , but zoanthids are usually pretty tolerant of the different lights we use leds included, provided they aren acclimated to the lights.

how old is this tank?

what type of flow are you using?

what is your other livestock , like fish, crabs, urchins etc?

i would do some reading on requireents for zoanthids and start narrowing down what the issue is.

a picture will help us see if the colonie/frag is thrieving or not:)

good luck

Zoas really don't need as much light as people would think. I would try to get your pH around 8.1 and make sure you alkalinity level is around 10. Alkalinity is very very important when it comes to corals :) I use Kent's Superbuffer and it works great! Hope this helps.

i do use kents plankton...My plan is only to use the Metal halide light on one side of the tank. That way corals and anenomes can ultimatley choose where they wanna be and how much light they want

Also, I have put a touch of purple up in the tank and watched my ph and alkalinity and believe it or not the zooids are moving a lot. Starting to come down the side of the frag onto some rock heres to hoping!
