Zoos, half ok half no

It's kind of hard to say without a pic.
1. Are the polyps detaching at all?
2. Are they withering away, or just not expanding?
3. Do they have a pinched or collasping appearance?
4. Is there something irritating them by chance, a fish or zoo predator? ( see the zooanthid information draft at the top of this forum) .
4b. What kind of fish do you have, invert, etc
5. Did you dip the rock before you placed it in your tank?
6. When you purchased it, were all of the polyps fully extended?
7. Was the rock shipped to you or did you purchase it at an LFS?
8. Is the rock placed in either corner of your tank?
9. Is it a longer tentacled zoo or the small mat like polyps?
10. Has the entire colony ever open completely?
11. Did you light acclimate it on the first day? By that I mean, did you place it in your tank and turn on your 10, 12K's etc, or did you just run your actinics for the first day or until the opened completely?
12. Remove the entire rock and place it 2 inches from your nose. If it has a foul or rotten odor, yes, something, most likely the polyps are dead/dying. Using a pair of dedicated tweezers or latex or reef safe gloves; gently squeeze a few of the affected polyps and see if they are mushy. If all or part of # 9 is true, they are indeed wasting away. In this case, you will have to use a clean scalpel and remove all of the dead/decaying tissue right down to the rock surface. Do this outside of the tank in a bowl of tank water nearly covering the rock. Once you have removed the decay, you must still remove 1 or 2 more rows of polyps around the affected area just to be sure that you have not missed any of the affect area that hasn't manifested itself visually. It's kind of like a surgeon who removes cancerous tissue, but also cleans around or removes any possible tissue where the cancer might have metastasized ( spread or migrated to). Once you have removed all of the decay, dip the rock in another bowl of tank water to clean the rock. Using a third bowl of water, add 4 or 5 drops of Lugols Iodine to a half gallon of water. Place the rock completely submerged in the water for a minute or two. Using a single Q tip, dab the end with a single drop of Lugols and gently clean around the perimeter of the area you just cut away. Once finished, remove the rock and swoosh it in another bowl of water to remove any residual iodine, then place the rock back in your tank in an area with very good flow. Leave it and don't touch it for a week. The rock will be stressed for a day or two but it will come around. Oh by the way, when you place it in your tank, do not run your daylights, just run your actinics for a day or two if you can. Sorry for the long reply, good luck.
