zoos shedding skin

Hello all i was wondering if you could help

I have 1 zoanthid colony in my reef tank that has not fully opened it has been good for over 1 year in my tank . Half of it is not opening there is about 200 to 300 heads on the colony

I have about 12 colony's in the tank and all of the other ones seem to be great

I have not had any new additions in over 8 months

the zoos don't have any sings of fungus, zoa pox, nudi

the day before they closed they were expelling brown stuff from the center but all of my zoos do that from time to time and open with brighter colors than before

i have a frag of the same zoos that are half closed also i was wondering if it could be the type of zoo that does this from time to time

there are not deteriorating or going soft they are just shedding what seems to be skin
this has only been going on for 3 days
the heads look fine except they wont open
to the best of my knowledge they are bulls eye zoo they have a brown skirt a red ring and a blue ring

there are plenty of heads to start a new colony
i was just wondering if i should start dipping them FW ,and iodine dips or any other suggestions
There is a picture of the colony if that helps

any help would be appreciated

Thank you in advance

Mike

Not sure what is happening the other small colony just opened up.

There are no sings of fungus or pox that i can see.
I did a google image search on zoo fungus, zoo pox,zoo predators etc.

I do not think it is a predator since i have not added any live stock in at least 8 months and if there were predators i think the problem would have shown its self sooner ( i think)

I am seeing if anybody has had this happen before

Thanks again

sorry my tank specs are alk 8.3 ,cal 420 ,salinity 1.025, ph between 7.9 and 8.3,7.9 in the morning and between 8.1 and 8.3 after lights go on, temp 78 degrees some times it will go as high as 80
I use reef crystals and does b ionic every day

hope this helps

I'd give them a pest dip, wait a day, then give them a furan 2 dip. You can find the furan 2 dip instructions all over RC now, type furan-2 in the search box.

have you dipped? It is not a close up but it looks like nudi eggs or pox as I see a few white spots on some of the closed polyps. Solomon polyps are finicky and tough on a newb.

Is this the same tank? If so then you could easily have predators.

What is the light, location in the tank and flow?
good luck

hello this tank that the coral is in is over 2 years old it is my 75 gallon
the 65 gallon i just started

the only reason i say no nudis is i personally made that colony from about 15 frags i dipped them before i glued them on that rock that has been in my system for about 1.5 year at that point (zoas were just a mat no rock attached)
i have not put any live stock in that tank in over 8 months i did not think nudis can go unseen for 8 months
go to you tube check out mike t's 72 gallon bowfront reef tank go to my videos and see the mike t'72 gallon bowfront reef tank UPDATED and this vid was taken one day before they closed
Thanks for all of your help

I do not think there is a need to get so defensive. Usually RC members that have 13 post's and ask such rudimentary questions, such as you have asked, most might consider that member inexperienced. I did not check out youtube for the videos and I wish you the best of luck. You have my 2 suggestions and one comment on the polyp origin, which are finicky.

Light level, tank placement and flow will also help others too chime in. I am sorry if I insulted your experience level. Good luck with your polyps!

sorry if I seemed rude

it just says clearly that there were no new additions in 8 months and there are 12 colony's of zoas alone
i assumed that people thought i did not have a tank full of coral at the 2 month mark

anyways i have about 4500 gph of flow i am running a tek 8 bulb system T5HO (i only use 4 bulbs 8 is too many i do not have any sps) 54 watts each in a 72 gallon tank with about 120 lbs of live rock
The colony is about 75% to the bottom of the tank where it has been for about 8 months
sorry again if i seemed rude it is just the other forum i came from ostersized you for everything and are very rude thats why i was defensive to you
I have to learn that all forums are not created equal lol:)
I have heard nothing but good things about rc from fellow reefers

I have spent the last 2 nights looking at the coral after dark and i have not seen any pests on anything i look 2 hours after the lights go off at first than every 2 hours after until i go to asleep lol

Anyways thanks for your time and i hope this experience does not upset you enough to not answer any of my questions in the future

Thank you
Have a great weekend
Mike

hello all if anybody was following this thread
I did nothing to the colony(no dipping,no freshwater dips) and it has fully opened with better color than before
I guess it was trying to shed skin to get rid of algae

so if anybody has this problem do not go to the dips right away

in my experience if you just leave corals, fish alone they usually work things out for them selves
