1 Gallon Nano... advice please

do you mean those big blue jugs that you take to the water store and get them filled up? if so, it'd be easier just to make one out of a regular 5 gallon tank (or a rubbermaid for that matter) because those big blue jugs are kinda tall for that

I like to Macguyver my own stuff... I know that would be easier... but this might be more fun...

lol cool idea! i think it would work fine. I dont see why not. just make sure theres not much flow in it. I've only used chaeto algae and i've had good luck w/that, but i'd definately put lr rubble in there, along w/sand. You could do live sand, or just get the aragonite and get a scoop or 2 of live sand from someone.

I made a canopy out of ABS and put three 9w bulbs over a Red Sea AquaVase. I also made the filter surface skim as well.

Keeping up with evaporation is critical in these little tanks and one left at the office (unless you're there everyday) may not be a great idea. Keeping the acrylic/plastic clear of coralline becomes a chore as well and it is what finally prompted me to take mine down.

Its car sales so pretty much only have one day off a week. The evaporation is the reason why I would like to add the 5 gallons of the sump/refugium.
I understand about the coral line algea also... I was not planning on over loading the tank with lots of coral. I mainly was thinking of putting small frags in to grow them for the 20 gallon nano I have here as well.
I am very interested in the surface skim... please explain more.

home depot wont have any bulbs for saltwater aquarium. i'm thinkin the highest kelvin rating they'd have is around 4 or so...and you need 10K to grow stuff.

now that i think of it tho...i dont even think home depot has any pc bulbs of any size. cuz i was trying to get some clips from them for mine, and the 3 guys didnt even know what pc bulbs are lol

you dont have to have 10k to grow stuff. actually 6500k is better for growth and they do carry them at home depot cause thats where i get mine along with most people that are into nanos. any home building places like lowes and home depot have pc bulbs you just have to dig for the 6500k.even walmart carries them in most areas .they also have the clip on bayco work lights at home depot, lowes and walmart with the 6500k pc's in them but you have to look to be sure they have the 6500k in them cause some times they put a lower k bulb in them. i used one of them retrofitted into a diy hood for my 2.5 with an aditional actinic bulb for more blue.

heres another option if they dont sell these at your lfs then you can order them.

Went to the local Homedepot... struck out... wall mart as well. HomeDepot only had 4500K at the max for the size fixture I had. I guess a trip to the pet store is due either way to get what I need.

Bought some more live rock to help with the filtration... didnt get any sand... I will at some point maybe just bring some from and existing tank at home.

I added two hermit crabs and a took at watchman goby from another tank tank I have...

JCopp,
Where did you get that the 1 gallon tank you are showing?
I have been looking for something exactly like that. Do you have a manufacturer or a link? Thanks.

Mark

hey can u tell me the make of your 1 gallon tank? i would lve 1but need to no the make so i can see if i can but it online. Also what type of flter are your running?

cheers mate.

Hey what kind of filter media do u have in ur filter? i want to do a 3 gallon but not sure of what filter and filter media to use. Im doing a simillar setup to yours but a hex tank.

Sorry for the delay guys... having a hard time with the bulb issue it is neat how the light matches the tank, but that might have to go. The coral life bulb that someone previously posted does not use the same connection that the fixture uses. I also think that the height of the light from the tank is an issue. I am welcoming comments on that as well.

As far as the filter goes, I have canned the water jug idea, and exchanged that for a 5 gallon bucket. I will draw a diagram tonight when I get home, I bought two minijets to use as the pumps, now I just want the smallest tubing I can use so that the flow is not to much. I am running a simple filter that came with the tank for right now, charcoal media I think.

The setup came from Petco... it was a gift from a fellow co worker, so I decided to run with it. Sand bed will be put in tommorow I am taking a mix of sand from a 12 gallon nano at home... Bermuda pink as I recall and a bit of sand from my FOWLR tank too. Also I added to very small hermits into the tank.

As far as the top goes... I wouldnt mind changing the filter so take water from the top of the tank... any ideas on that again I will take a look at. That is the whole idea of posting this... IDEAS!

Problem number one... the light
Problem number two... filtration... I want that hang on filter gone in place of a ______ filter... I will probably end up going with a VERY small canister if a refugium idea does not work.

Thank you all for your input... I appreciate all of it.

you could put that hob on the back cant you? that would make it less unsightly...or is that not the problem with it?

Well i just looked on doc foster and smith and i couldnt find any small canisters...i'm sure thers gotta be one out there somewhere tho.
