Here is a pic of the bottom of my overflow section of a tank i purchased. i was reading on dursostandpipes.com and on there he recommends not using dual overflows for this size tank. i was hoping you guys could give me some input on how i should go about this. should i use both or just one of them? i am currently in the development stage of my setup. any input is appreciated, thanks!

the large holes are 2 3/8" diameter
the small holes are 1 1/2" diameter

Well one 2.375" drain is enormous, you could definitely suffice with just one of them. But it's up to you, how much flow are you looking to get through the drain?

well, thats why i wanted to get some input from other people. this is my first tank, and after doing a lot of reading i dont think i will need to use both large overflows for this size tank. so i could probably just cap one of them off and be fine with just using one.

It looks to me like it was being used for a closed loop setup. You could use the two 1 1/2" holes for your drains to the sump and the two larger holes for an inlet and outlet for a closed loop pump. Then just run a return line from your sump around the back to the display.

805reef,

The 2-3/8" Diameter holes will accept a 1-1/2" bulkhead fitting. I would make one of these a primary drain and the second one an emergency overflow.

Unfortunately, a 1-1/2" diameter hole may only accept a 1/2" or 3/4" bulkhead. I would use these as my return lines.

You're right, you don't need both for flow through the sump but making one a backup wouldn't hurt and may save you down the road.

hmmm.... i hadnt even thought about a backup. i think that is a great idea! i think i will go with that idea. thank you very much!

you could use one drain to feed a fuge and or a phosban reactor or a protein skimmer the other thru the sump.

not only will 2 drains give you piece of mind with the overflow, doing herbie standpipes will make your system dead silent
