Even in a tank large enough for tangs (of course that depends on which tang), tangs can become aggressive or be aggressive. A Sohal, for example, no matter what size tank, will be aggressive. And not just towards other tangs.
My guess is that he was aggressive because he was too confined.
More than one tang in a 55 is pushing it...
As for a larger tank, you can have more than one tang but generally you need to get ones with different body shapes (ie: yellow tang, blue tang). If two fish have the same body shapes they will fight unless they are a mated pair.

Also it is not fully grown and as big as a dollar coin.
That is good for now but it will eventually get too big and you'll have to sell him causing a bit of heartbreak for you and stress for him. For now if he's that small he's ok IMHO but just keep an eye on him.

I'm keeping a yellow tang and a sailfin tang in my tank. The sailfin has become "King of the Tank" and there is often aggressive posturing between the two fish. They have both been in there a while and are calm most of the time. However, when fins go up, it is always between the two tangs.
