This may be a dumb quetion but I just bought a 10gal glass tank for my mantis setup. I put a 1/4 inch piece of plexiglass on the bottom. will a mantis smash the side of the tank. I didn't even think of that. duh. I have a eclipse 12. should I use it instead.

depends on the mantis. do you know what species it is? only large/aggressive ones like larger G. chiragra and O. scyllarus (peacock) can break glass.

What I've read, which makes sense, is that any mantis small enough to be housed in a nano tank just doesnt have the force required to break glass. G. chiragra may be the exception, though.

Any mantis with a samsher can crack glass. IF it feels like it, it will. It is just more likely for the more aggressive ones to do it. I kept a 6 inch peacock in a 10 gallon glass for like 3 months and it was fine. Then I moved it to a 34 gallon and it hits the glass the glass once in a while, but it doesnt damage it.

no, not any smasher can break glass. for example, to think that N. wennerae or G. smithii could break 1/4 inch glass is just... well, it isnt going to happen.

Just stay away from the large smasher's and you'll be fine. Get a N Wennerae and no worries. I have one and every time i put my finger on the glass she smack it but it does nothing. I am getting a Peacock soon and will have a custom acrylic tank that is bullet proof:D I want a large mantis and have no worries about it breaking glass.
