10 Gal sump?

Does it seem worth while or practical to use a 10 Gal tank for a sump. Currently I have a 55 gal with a wet dry. My skimmer wont fit in the wet dry and no other tank will fit into my stand. I'm building a 75 Gal but after my PS3 purchase (kid at heart) it will be slow go for a couple of months. I think it will hold the power off overflow and shouldn't be to bad for evaporation. Any one ever try a 10 gal? or I'm I not thinking of something?

I did it for awhile then got real sick of it. Not much room in there. I don't know what the inside of your stand is like or it's size but could you squeeze a 20 gallon long in it? It is only one inch wider but 10 inches longer and allows for more room for expansion.

a 20l is 1/8" to wide to fit in a 55g stand I tried, I have a megaflow sump that I am no longer using I can part with

ya don't do a 10g sump. I had my 40g going with a 10g sump and it was horrible. Water evaporation was crazy, no room for anything even with a HOB remora skimmer. I got a few sheets of 1/4" acrylic we can use to make a sump if you want. I don't have any weld-on though. The acrylic are pretty big pieces, 8x4 I think.

You can also get a 15g or 20g with the same footprint as a 10g but the height is different. I don't know how tall your stand is but one of those might offer more volume and even thicker glass. 10g's scare me with their puny 1/8" thick glass. One bump and CRACK!

Its a AGA stand with the door in the middle so what ever goes in has to be under 11" and not very long because it has to go in at a angle.

I have a new Euroreef in the basement and red slime is getting real bad. Thought it would be worth a shot but everyone kind of confirmed my worries. I'm going to have a 20H and a 29 sump/ref in the basement when I get the new tank running so I was thinking cheap easy fix, but as we all know that doesn't work in this hobby.

Oldreefer how much you want for the megaflow?

Hi,

I have a 75gal. tank with a 10gal. sump. It is pretty crowded but it does work. I would go as big as you can for the sump.

Akron,

I have a 55 gallon right now and I use a 10 gallon sump. I admit that I would feel a whole lot more comfortable if I had 20 instead BUT as it is, I don't have room to fit a 20. However, surprisingly, the 10 works just fine. The only reason I went with a 10 is because I wanted to keep everything UNDER the tank (within the stand).

Originally, I had a 20 gallon sump that had to sit behind the tank and it took up too much room. Hence, the only options were either a wet/dry (TOO EXPENSIVE); a 10 gallon sump...or a bigger tank with a bigger stand. Well, the 10 is doing just fine and I haven't had any flooding yet.

Just be sure to keep your overflow and return at a level that is manageable EVEN if the power goes out.
