10+ years of a 20,000 Gallon Reef Tank

Last year I visited this magnificent tank, I took a small video using my underwater housing... Here's the link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75W9J2E3ohQ

Joe was an excellent host!

Is this public or in a house?

Public, http://www.atlantismarineworld.com/

Im a member and get to see it regularly, it really is stunning to stand in front of. Some of the largest corals you will see with fantastic colors. He also has some amazing displays, like a 2000g cold water kelp tank, 2000g cichlid tank and 2000g "best friends" tank which is clowns and nems. Truly a one of a kind aquarium.

Hope you don't mind Joe, I thought Id share the nems too.

this is so sweet. you can dive a reef every day. lol. Got any more pics from initial construction, or behind the scenes equipment?

Joe, I met you in Anaheim a couple years ago, attended your talk, which was full of great pearls, thank you.

Are you still dosing Lanthanum Chloride? If so, can you provide some of the details on how you are currently dosing it?

Are you using any other modalities to lower phosphates and nitrates?

What are you using for flow these days? Have you tried the Panta Rhei Hydro Wizard?

I saw the hydro wizzard in the tank. Joe said it made a fairly huge wave at 100%, even on the low setting it was creating visable water movement across the tank. A testament to the power of the pump IMO.

thanks Beaun, is Joe still using his original propeller to stir things up?

say a bit about those light....how many and how much...?

12 Silver cans are 1000watt daylight bulbs, some are Ushio 10k, some are Sunmaster Cooll deluxe bulbs

8 fixtures down the center are Ushio 1000w blue bulbs

6 fixtures on wall are 400w Ushio 10k

1 fixture on wall is 400w Ushio 20k moonlight

There are some translucent skylights above the tank, they are small and just provide ambient light, no real intensity for corals even on a sunny day.

Yes on the lanthanum, 300ml's diluted in 5 gal RO water, dosed slowly into the intake of the sand filter, it lasts about 8 days.
I run some GFO's as well, but its the LC that is doing the bulk of the work
I started some vinegar/ vodka dosing over the last 5 months, it has dropped the nitrates to around 10 which hopefully is good enough to stop some bryopsis that has popped up.
Yes, been using the Hydorwizard and its awesome, best thing out there by far. I still use my other prop pumps as well, but main workhorse is hydrowizard, it can do an estimated 50,000 gallons per hour, at a reported 380watts... impressive

How often do you backwash the sand filter? any problems with dissolved accumulated organics with nitrates/phosphates leaching back into the tank?

How do you suppose the Bryopsis was introduced? What is your plan of attack?
