I am wondering If I can use this product safely in my tank, after it has cured. It can be used it says with lexan plastic, other plastics, glass. SAys it realeases methanol and ammonia during curing. It is quick set, so it cures in 12 hrs. IS this safe to use after it is cured in my tank?

The "100%" on the label is meaningless...

Ensure that the label does not indicate any type of anti-fungal or anti-bacterial agents, bioseal, bioguard etc.

It sounds like you are describing "GE Silicone II" which now in ALL cases has the fungicide in it. The silicone II formulation gives off the ammonia and methanol odor, where the silicone I gives off a vinegar smell.

BOTH GE I and GE II say "100% Silicone" even though the type II has the anti-fungal stuff in it.

It may be an "old" tube of GE II that was made before the fungicides were added. But Silicone has a fairly short shelf life, so the chances of getting the "old stuff" are starting to dwindle.

Bean

It says nothing about anti bac, thanks, it just said a lot of stuff, like really long chemical names under the section if if i is gotten in eyes etc, Im guessing this is negligible after curing?

So I can use it after curing?, and the exact full name of the product is...

100% Silicone Sealant for Lexan* sheet & other plastics.

It also says:

translucent
Outstanding adhesion
quick setting
permanently flexible
uv resistant

then the ge symbol.

Weel, it does say that it only emits the methanol, and ammo9nia during curing. The tank will be completely empty during its 12 hr curing time, Ill leave it a few hrs after ebven to make sure, so?

You need at least 48h curing time.
Personnaly I would buy DAP 100% silicone/GE 100% silicone Type I

heres some information i found out last year:

silicone 1 or 2 not recommended.

excerpt from my earlier post:
To keep the algae from discoloring the clear silicone on the front corners from the lighting, i removed it, cleaned the glass carefully, taped off the glass and applied a bead of "AGA Brand" 100% black silicone to replace the clear. my researched is as follows: the "GE brand silicone 1 and 2" are not of the same quality and strength. while they work, they are not recommended (just like it says on the tubes) for a reason. the shear strengh is not the same as is the adhesion. the "AGA" brand is of the same quality and is what aquarium manufactures use in sealing there tanks. It is the 'Ethyl Triacetoxysilane as acetic Acid that gives it its adhesion and strength. the GE types (less odor) uses Methoxypolydimethylsiloxane and silicas. these GE caulks do have excellent adhesion but not what aquariums need for long term exposure underwater. and nobody wants a seam leak a few months or a few years down the line. this is especially true if using to "build" a tank...

So what I have is fine? I am not building a tank, I am simply constructing a wall to hold refugium sand bed in, and keep the flow from going everywhere. It is going ijn the tank, so there is no need for shear strength. So teh GE stuff I have is ok, just one last check. But i thinking ill get and use the AGA brand just to make sure.

sure for in tank dividers and such the "ge" will do excellent.

For one last check before I use it, it says its excellent for all marine appliations above the waterline. So it will NOT POISON my tank?

If it does NOT have the Bio-Guard... you are OK. I have the GE type II (bought before they started adding teh Bio-Guard) sealing the overflow to the back glass in my tank right now.

"When in doubt, leave it out"

If you're really struggling to reassure yourself whether it's safe our not, why risk it? Just get some silicone that is for aquarium use.

Lowes, and other hardware stores I'm sure, carry aquarium silicone. In my case I looked at every single tube of silicone in the caulking section of Lowes, and it seemed every one had "Not suitable for aquarium use" written somewhere in fine print. After giving up and planning to just order some, I strolled around the store, stumbling into the adhesive/glue section....this is where they keep the aquarium silicone at Lowes. *$#@ers! Why they keep the aquarium silicone with the adhesives instead of the silicone I don't know.
