100's tube worms overnight

I got some dried out rock from a friend's tank shutdown (he shut it down a few weeks ago) and I stuck a few pieces in my fuge tank. Over night I had an outbreak (100's) of these worms. They have the featherduster umbrella that comes out of one end and I can see them moving around. I isolated the tank (turned a valve) until I can find out what they are.... are they some kind of pest? Were they able to survive being on the dry rock for a week or 2?

Ya, thanks, it was just a little startling as all of a sudden there were 100's of them pretty much overnight.
