110 Gallon TBS Experience

First off, I have been eyeing TBS for sometime before jumping in head first. My shipment arrived last Saturday evening, got bumped off the first flight. Once it finally arrived, we brought it him and went to work. The sand and rock was just incredible... in fact one of the Rocks was huge, and I mean huge.

So far so good, I did have to make two water changes because my Ammonia readings jumped to 1.2 ppm. I'm assuming from the die off...hopefully it will start going down from here.

We did have two Gorrilla Crabs which I was able to remove, however last night a friend of ours saw a huge Crab nestled in that large rock. From the looks of things, it has to be at least 3" in diameter. Will have to get some raw shrimp in a glass to see if I can catch him tonight.

Richard, will adding the shrimp prolong/increase the cycling process?

Hiya

baiting up the crab is ok, but best just to reach in and grab him...is the easy way.....just don't leave the shrimp in there for long...will be no issues with that.....and do keep the ammonia under 1ppm......and next week will be Part two time!

Keep us posted

Update

I just wanted to let everyone know I received my second shipment last Friday and couldn't wait to get to the airport. As I paid for the freight and handed the worker the invoice, he looked at me and said "oh the fish". At first I didn't understand what he meant by it, but once I saw the boxes, I knew. One Box was totally torn up...it was basically just the bag, and two others were leaking. I drove home as fast as I could to hopefully avoid any loss and am glad I did.

After opening all the boxes, I realized I would have to do some more Aquascaping, because Richard again included a very large Rock that would offset the other large one I received during my first shipment. I received serveral Sponges, plants, etc. along with a hearty Clean-up Crew...

I can tell you everyday we find something new in the tank, just last night I saw a shrimp I hadn't seen yet, It was feasting on something dead and as I watched it must have seen me and shot off under the rocks at 100 mph and made some clicking noise. Hopefully he won't be too much of a bother. Anyway, wanted to share a couple of picks

Thanks everyone...it is definately coming together. Found I have a Mantis Shrimp and not a Pistol Shrimp as I first thought. Should I remove or is it ok to keep...think he's dining on my Hermit Crabs.

I think you just answered your own question. :D What's he going to be dining on next...

Now actually capturing him... that's another story. Heh.

Mantis Trapping

Has lots of successful methods from TBSers. There is no "one way" that will skin all cats in this case. They are intelligent and wiley and require patience to catch. I finally let the last one be in my tank and he just eats CUC every so often, but I only see him about once a month. I think I caught about 7 though using various methods.

I was suprised to find I was really depressed when I got rid of my last mantis. I was stupid and taking way to many chances but within the first week I had my last one eating out of my hand. The good news is he has a 75g tank all to himself at a buddies house but I still miss him LMAO. If you don't plan on any expensive fish I would keep him and just make sure to drop a fat chunk of food in front of his burrow a couple times a week. But sure enough if you have 10 fish that run $15 a peice and 1 fish worth $200 he will get the expensive one first! (just standard murphy's law with reef tanks)
