12 Long Mr. Aqua

Hey everyone!

This is not my first experience with saltwater, but this is my first build thread and I'm very excited!

A little bit about my background in the hobby...I started out about 3 years ago with a little standard 10 gallon. It was an AIO system with PC lighting. I had 2 clowns and ran it as a mixed reef. To be honest, I had didn't know what I was doing. I tried SPS before I even knew what it took to keep them healthy and alive...you all know what happened there. That tank was taken over my dinoflagellates and all sorts of Algae, so instead of battling that for months and months, I decided to upgrade to a 75 gallon. This was my baby for about a year and I learned a lot with this tank. It was a very much DIY tank. It didn't look the greatest (which is why I never put it on here), but I loved that tank. I went through a full tank crash, lost everything and decided to re-build it. It looked better than ever, but I began planning a study abroad in Asia and had to sell everything to get some money for my trip. It has been about a year and half since having a tank and I've been getting the itch to get back in it.

A few months ago I married the girl of my dreams and decided this would be a great opportunity to start up again. She she said I could have some money that we got from the wedding to start up a tank. I decided to keep it small and go with a Mr. Aqua 12 gallon long rimless...wasn't she nice? The dimensions are roughly 35"x9"x8" and it looks amazing!

So, I've had it up and running for a couple months now and here's where I'm at.

I'm running this peninsula style with no sump. I decided to go with a tunze 6025 off the back end for flow and the lighting is a rapidled DIY LED strip. I
do a 1 gallon water change every day or so to keep water parameters at decent levels.

Here are some pictures of its early days and the present.

The stand is at the perfect height to view it while sitting on the couch :)

I ordered a DIY LED kit from rapidLED. I ended up going with a 36" long heat sink with 18 3w CREE LEDs. I have a combination of royal blue, natural white, cool white and UV. I think it looks pretty good...might be a little too red, we'll see.

So my dad and I put my LEDs together and get it hung from the ceiling. Turned out awesome!

Probably best to take a look at the directions :)

Doing a little soldering and shrink wrapping to get it looking sleek.

Super glueing the 80 degree optics. This was the one problem I had with RapidLED...they have everything fit so nicely and clean, then they give you these optics that you need to super glue on. I was hoping you could just snap them on over the LED but we had to super glue. It ended up looking pretty good though.

I wanted to hang the fixture from the ceiling so we picked up some toggle bolts and drilled some holes in the ceiling. Threaded the wire through and connected our fixture, worked perfectly. I am very pleased with the look.

How it hangs from the ceiling.

This was the first batch or corals. You can also get a look at my aquascape. I picked up some acrylic rods, putty, and some dry nano BRS rock. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I love the bridge!

Thanks @Nivek0bright. I see you're starting one as well...you will love it!

Here are the most recent shots of the tank.

Awesome, I wish I had the room for this footprint, but I don't.

I like what you've done w/ the scape
keep updates coming!

Very, very good looking tank. It is so sleek and as so many people have said, you just can't put an ugly system up with one of these.

Very Nice Tank!, I love the footprint of these Mr. Aqua Tanks. They give you the allusion of a much bigger tank. Good luck with this tank. I will be tagging along for this one. Keep it wet man.

Great tank! I have one of these tanks in the garage because I am intimidated by aquascaping it and can't figure out where to put it. Also I can't figure out how to do a clean looking filter. It looks like you've got a pipe system in there? Can you explain that a bit? It really looks good.

Also good choice in marriage! :) fish tank from the wedding money....pretty nice!

Thanks Tommer. I love the rimless look and I agree, you just can't put up an ugly system with this tank.

Thanks Reefed419. I get asked all the time how big the tank is and they can't believe it's only 12 gallons. I love it!

Haha, I agree OrQidz! If she's willing to give me money from our marriage to put towards a system, she's definitely a keeper! :fun2: Aquascaping is a challenge but a fun one. You'll have a blast coming up with something. As far as keeping the tank clean...I run nothing. I was going to go with a closed loop but my wife didn't like how loud it was. I ended up going with a Tunze 6025 for flow and I do a gallon water change daily. I literally have no algae and it's the cleanest tank I've ever had. Don't be intimidated, you'll love it!
