12 Nano Cube/fission nano skimmer

I bought this tank from a private owner. With it I received a couple pounds of cured live rock, at least an inch of live sand.

He also gave me a Fission Skimmer. He has used it, but thought it wasn't necessary.

I have no idea how to install this. I looked and tried to figure out how it would work without removing the hood.

Can someone give me some suggestions? Preferably someone with the same tank.

Do you even use a skimmer? If I change water every two weeks, will that be enough?

not to hijack the thread or anything, but i've also been looking into the fission skimmer, (simply because it's the smallest/cheapest skimmer that'll fit into a 2.5g sump) i'd like to hear WHY everyone thinks that the skimmer is worthless, does it not pull any skimmate? is it really noisy? i've read about it producing micro bubbles, but wouldn't a baffle or a sponge cut those down? Not to be rude, but if your goin' to tell someone to throw something away, you might want to tell them why also

I don't own one or ever used one but I don't think i've seen more hated remarks against any other piece of equipment here. People who used it say the collection cup fills with water no matter how much you adjust it, the unit produces a lot of microbubbles, poorly made, etc. That's enough for me to never try one.

crabs is right. The guy did not have it set up on his tank as he discovered it was a piece of junk, a subject cited quite often here in various threads.

It does not work. Is that enough info, not to be rude and by the way, there have been dozens of posts over the last few months wherein people have almost unanimously expressed dissatisfaction with the fission. That should be enough for the average person to make a decision, not to be rude. :eek1: :eek1:

You get what you pay for.

I bought it because it was cheap. Figured I'd try it out. The cup filled with water, no skimmate. I figured I'd just use the powerhead for more circulation, but that even stopped working after a week.

you get EXACTLY what u pay for in this hobby. It is a peice of crap because it doesnt pull skimmate out of the tank no matter how you adjust it. Just a poorly made product

hahahahah...okay, me being just an average guy, I'll go with the majority and not use it. I did like the idea of extra waterflow though...I'll try that anyway.

I don't understand why everyone hates this product so much.

I just got my first tank a few days ago, with the Fission Nano Skimmer and it's been working really well.

I empty the collection cup every other day and it collects quite a bit of gunk.

The micro bubbles on the other hand are a bit of a pain but it's nothing you can't get used to.

micro bubbles are a serious problem when it comes to a reef tank. corals dont like em!

Hey glad to see you made it to the forums. He got the tank from me a few weeks ago and I had done some upgrades to it. I had upgraded the stock pump with a MJ900 for the added water flow and put a hydor flow for better water movement. Also the middle chamber is setup to be used as a refugeum just need a good light for it.

If the higher the dryer is true, then the thing is designed to fail.

The skimmate is very watery.

The filter material that the water goes thru on return will have to be changed very often, usually this will mean taking the whole thing apart.

The plastic pipe joins on mine split.

The venturi line was clogged when i bought it, it had to be opened at the end inside the pump.

If the thing was taller, by maybe 5 inch's it would be alot better.

The collection cup needs to be bigger. Taller would also help the optional drain outlet.

The one upside to the thing is I now have a small pump to mix my new water with....

My diy skimmer works much better all the way around and cant flood my carpet, like the fission did... plastic water bottles and an air stone works much better that my fission ever did.

I got a fission from a co-worker last weekend. After dealing with the micro-bubbles for a few days, I decided to do something about it. After inspection of the piece of filter material used to stop the bubbles, its performance is... shall we say, less than desirable. I cut a small piece of blue bonded filter pad (a cheap piece of dense filter floss-type material) and replaced the standard white filter ring with this. I reassembled the skimmer, placed it back in the tank and turned it back on.
Immediately, the number of micro-bubbles in the tank was significantly less than before (there are still some, but its minimal) and more action is going up the collection cup riser. After a day, I am already seeing significant positive results and a darker liquid in the cup starting to form (I was only getting condensation in the cup before this). I'm actually impressed with the thing now.

For those already with a fission, I recommend trying this before tossing it. For those thinking about getting one, wait to hear about more results first but dont completely dismiss it as an option just yet.

I'm sure there are some structural modifications that can be done to improve its performance but as for now, its behaving quite well. I'll give it a week and see how it works before I start thinking of cutting it up. Heh.

I used a fission for about 4 months, while I agree it's not particularly great it did skim.

It's unfair to say that it 'doesn't work' - if someone can't get it working then that's because they haven't been patient enough setting it up correctly & waiting for it to bed in.

theres nothing wrong with wet skimming, for the size of tank its either use it or go with water changes more often

or just buy a remora or cpr bakpak
