120 gallon Lionfish tank

The fish in question is indeed P. antennata. Pectoral spotting and coloration can be variable in this species, and the fact that P.mombassae is very close in appearance doesn't make ID any easier.

I think the fact that the specimen appears to be pretty young is also making the ID a bit nebulous.

I'd love to see what you got in.

Hi Greg, would you concur that the first one is P. mombassae? So the second is P. antennata and the third D. zebra. Thanks!!

Thank you Greg and Jarrod both for your expert opinions on the id of the fish :) It's great to have positive IDs from lionfish experts like yourselves.

Unfortunately, Lionfish #2 and #3 did not survive (both shipped in the same shipment, so I suspect that it was a rough shipment/poor handling issue).

I have reserved Lionfish #1 (different retailer and shipment from #2 and #3) and will be heading back to the retailer tonight to reserve a P. antennata from the same batch as well. Will bring both back when the QT tank is ready, so I will have a Fu Manchu, Mombassae and Antennata for now :) An amusing anecdote is that the Fu Manchu is currently larger in size than both the Mombassae and Antennata. Hopefully the small size of the 2 fish means they'll be easier to wean onto frozen food!

The yellow fuzzy is on order and will come once the fishermen locate one, and the retailer that brought in #2 ad #3 regularly comes in with radiata and dwarf zebras. Hope to get those 2 in once the first 3 are properly QT'ed and weaned onto frozen food.

I intend to put the 3 initial lions through hyposalinity, with metro and prazi treatment at the same time. Hopefully that will get rid of most if not all the parasites that may be on the fish. Would this be a good idea?

Fuzzies in particular become very tame and bold. I've had them literally swimming circles around my arm while working on the tank, which can be a little disconcerting at first, but I prefer tame fishes to frightened fishes.

This also works to your advantage if you ever have to catch them, as they likely won't run.

I got the mombassa pictured in #1 above in my QT now. Took him home with another tiny antennata but the antennata died overnight :( (mombassa is about 2 inches, the antennata was about 1.5 inches).

Mombassa is still alive and perching on the sponge filter, but is not eating yet. I think the ghost shrimp I have is too big for it (ghost shrimp are about 1-2 inches in length). I may need to go locate small guppy/molly fry to try and induce the Mombassa to eat. What do you think the odds are of the Mombassa miraculously taking frozen food off a stealth stick?

The Fu Manchu is still doing well and eating 1 ghost shrimp a day. Despite being a dwarf, he looks large when compared to the tiny Mombassa!

Just an update, the Fu Manchu, Mombassae and a Dwarf Zebra are sharing the qt tank at the moment. I gave in and bought feeder mollies and the lions went nuts. Amazingly, the Fu Manchu is the most voracious feeder. The Dwarf Zebra is more moderate but is definitely eating. The Mombassae is the smallest of the lot and he shows interest in both ghost shrimp and mollies, but so far he's only lunged at them and missed, and the other 2 get the food before he has the chance to try again. I have now inserted dividers into the qt tank to separate them so he has a chance to eat. Hope he starts eating soon!

I am slowly dropping the salinity to start hypo treatment in qt coupled with prazi and metro. SG is now 1.017 and dropping slowly as I replace salt water with RO.

Once fu's srart eating for you, they are extremely voracious. Ours would even swim into the water column to beg if we were "too slow" getting around to it (there were seven fishes in the tank).

Congrats on getting them all eating!

The mombassae ate 1 molly today but ignores all other attempts to feed it live food. Upon closer inspection, I find that the right eye is cloudy but not protruding while the left eye is fine. No signs of ich at all. Is this a bacterial infection? I have Furan 2 on standby should I start a 10 day course?

For Furan 2, the instructions on Lionfish Lair say to replace the amount of Furan in ratio to water changed, then later on it says for days 2-10 to do a 50% water change daily followed by 1 packet per 10 gallons. Does this mean I dose 1.5 packets per 10 gallons after each 50% water change (0.5 pack to replace medication for water change + 1 pack for daily dose)? Or is it just 1 packet per day after water change?

I also have in my medicine cabinet oxytetracycline and Seachem Kanaplex and am able to get API Tetracycline and Triple Sulfa if any of these meds are better.
