i ran a 29 in mine when I had my bigger tank, but kept the level at around 20g, wanted the higher tank to keep splashes inside the glass and not in my stand. You can have what ever size you want, any extra volume helps.
Skimmer is fine in the fuge, just dont skim the fuge. Skim the water before the fuge, other wise you will be skimming the good stuff in the fuge. Clean water should enter the fuge then go to the display. Then, dirty water goes into the sump into the skimmer then back to the fuge.
no id suggest sticking with a fuge sump set up. and it doesnt matter if the skimmer is before, or after the fuge. its personal preference imo. i run a proflex sump and my skimmer is in the last stage after the fuge and next to my return pump. i love my sump and fuge set up. really quiet, filters great, and no micro bubbles.
Really just a matter of opinion, but my experience shows me that skimming my pods doesent help feed my fish, it just helps feed my skimmer. The fuge is a refuge for all things delicate and fish food firendly. As my return pump draws water from my sump towards returning it to the display from one side of the sump to the other, one more pump for them to battle just reduces the chance that the food source will end up in the display. To each is own. I would run both if you can.
