120g mixed reef build - virgin reefer (pics/long)

Looking good, seems like you're really doing your homework. As I am also setting up a 120 with a 40 gal sump, I will surely be following. P.S. they do make clear PVC primer.

Phosphate Test

Phosphate Test

Well after 48hrs in plain saltwater I pulled out the Hanna ultra-low range phosphate checker. Still trying to get the hang of this thing... it's tricky to get all the reagent to disolve in the 1m 30s you have before the auto-shut off resets the tester.

Anyway, got a reading of 10ppb. Really low! So either this means my rock is really good... or I spilled a bunch of reagent and didn't get an accurate reading :lmao:

Anyway, I threw a couple shrimp in there to start the nitrogen cycle and will test for phosphate again in a couple days to see if I get a higher number.

Chem Lab Night

Chem Lab Night

Well, thought I'd start my water test log early with the rock bin! It's chemistry time!

breaking-bad-tim-seeley_zpsa8d07e05.jpg

All I need is a beat-up RV in the back yard and a yellow hazmat suit!

So here's my lab setup... I feel like Dr. Frankenstein! I've always loved the water testing stuff and now that I'm testing CA, KH and Mg... wow... much more complex than the old freshwater tests!

ChemLab_zpsee86ef3e.jpg

So here were my results... Again, this was just testing the water in my tub where the rocks are curing. The rocks went in on Sunday, the shrimp went in 48hrs ago.

SG: 1.026
pH: 8.1
NH4: 1.0 ppm
NO2: 0
NO3: N/A
PO4: 36ppb (was 10ppb 48hrs ago)
CA: 390 ppm
Kh: 9.35 dKH
Mg: 1300 ppm

WOOT! I've got Ammonia! At least the shrimps are doing their job and rotting away nicely!

YeahNH4_zpsa165e020.jpg

No Nitrite yet, but again, only 2 days after adding shrimp. Will give it a couple more days and test again this weekend. The PO4 went up a bit but still not too bad. I'm not going to start dosing LC until it hits 100ppb.

Looks like the CA and KH are both pretty low, but I expected that. I'm just using straight Instant Ocean sea salt to cure the rock. Will switch to Reef Crystals once I start getting livestock and will be dosing Kalk as well.

So far, so good. I'll be picking up my QT tank tomorrow and get the cycle started on that too! Getting exciting!

Liquid cooled too.. Nice... I always like the GTX card.

You are set and ready to go... Glad it is moving like it is supposed to do.

Keep on doing updates. Lets get this moving along.

I can't believe this is your first time with salt given how much time you've spent planning out the system. You must have done a ton of research. It looks great and good luck with the build.

Filled Tank in the House!!

Filled Tank in the House!!

WOOT! Filled tank finally in the livingroom! I've even got my first shrimp floating around!

ok, don't get too excited. The tank is my QT tank and the shrimp was a leftover from my shrimp coctail midnight snack lastnight

Shrimp's been in for 14hrs or so and the water is a bit cloudy. Here are a couple pics.

QTTank_zpsc7e56f5e.jpg

This is a TopFin 20g high tank kit I picked up from Petsmart. They were onsale for $75. Included one of the TopFin 20 powerfilters, 100w heater, and a LED light hood. I also picked up a matching stand which was a major PITA!

They mis-drilled the holes in the top of the stand which, of course, is one of the last pieces to go on. By the time I realized it, I already had everything else glued together. So I decided to improvise and re-drill the holes myself in their proper location. Eventhough I measured three times, I still managed to screw it up and a couple of the holes were off by 1/8". Just enough so the top wouldn't sit on the dowels it was suppose to fasten into.

So, on to improvisation number 2... I decided to screw the top directly into the legs from the top. Certainly not ideal but I wanted to get it done. On the first leg, the damn cheap screw I was using ended up stripping the philips head out after I got it about 2" deep. Had to use vise grips to get it back out!

Then, I got two of the legs piloted and screwed on pretty well and on the third one, the screw snapped off about 3/4" below the head! ARG!!

By this time it was 2am and I switched to a better quality drywall screw and drilled and screwed the last two legs. Finally got it build after about 5 freeking hours!

The tank kit itself seems pretty nice. The filter is quiet and seems big enough (100gph) for a QT tank. The heater is cheap and doesn't have a real temp setting... you just turn the dial from higher to lower and wait for the temp to normalize, turn it up or down and wait again, etc. Kind of a pain but hey, it was cheap.

The LEDs are ok... better than the incandescents they had in their other kits. Easy to install and setup.

And here's the shrimp, rotting away!
FirstShrimpInHouse_zps52b81f32.jpg

Going to let the shrimp do it's thing for a week or two then I may look at getting one the bacteria boosters for the QT tank so I can try to speed the cycle a bit. I would imagine the DT will be ready for fish in about 5-6 weeks so I'd like to get those fish in QT pretty quick.

2nd round of water tests

2nd round of water tests

I did another round of water tests on both the rock tub and QT tank. In the rock tub, looks like NH4 went up a bit more to maybe 1.5ppm. No Nitrites yet though. Interestingly enough, the phosphates only went up to 38ppb. That's after a full week in the water... not bad really... seems these dry rocks from ReefRocks.net are pretty good. I went ahead and put 5ml of LC in the tub after testing and we'll check it again tomorrow and see if it percipitated some of that PO4 out of the water column.

As for the QT tank, NH4 showing at .5ppm. It's on it's way.

I'm putting together a draft stock list of what I'm thinking about sticking in this box of water and when. I'll post that in a bit.

Proposed Stock Plan

Proposed Stock Plan

So, the overall plan was to set up a LPS/Soft dominated tank to start and maybe bring in some SPS after a year or so. So the DT is on order and should be here on Saturday. The rock has been curing for a week now so I'm hoping the cycle will be completed in 4-5 more weeks or so. Then I'll add the 50lbs of live rock from Live Rock "˜n' Reef and the CUC"¦ I'll call this week 0. I'll wait a week or two to be sure I don't get another cycle and to let my first batch of fish get through quarantine.

So, here's what I'm looking to put in and when I plan to introduce them. Note that I may not buy them from the store I linked here but for those who aren't familiar with the species (mainly my family J) this should give you an idea. I'm sure I'll be bringing home various impulse buys from the LFS of course!

I'm really looking for input here guys so please don't be shy. Obviously the timeline will be based on how the tank is doing"¦ especially with the trickier stuff like the anemone, mandarin, etc.

Week 0:

Week 2:

Week 8 (around my birthday... hint to the family):

Week 14:

Week 26:

Week 40: (being optimistic with my refugium!)

Week 52: (being optimistic with my water quality!)

LC Works!

LC Works!

Hey, just ran another phosphate test after adding the LC lastnight... went from 38ppb down to 9ppb! Nice. Will test again in a couple days to see if the PO4 starts to creep up again. Will keep testing and dosing LC until Po4 stays below 20ppm for a week straight.

Another species I just came across that I'm interested in are the Ultra Maxi Mini Carpet Anemones. Those look awesome. Just started reading a bit about them. Anyone have any experience with them? I've heard some folks suspect them as fish hunters but, as with everything in this hobby, there seems to be conflicting info.

maybe wait longer than 40 weeks for the mandarin...i waited well over a year to be sure my 90 was ready...he's growing and fat every day

Revised Stock Plan

Revised Stock Plan

After the feedback I got here as well as some other sites, i've adjusted my stock plan to thin it out a bit and slow it down. I know it's not a good idea to overstock a tank, especially a new tank, but as a newbie it can be hard to identify what exactly constitutes an overstocked tank. After several days of research in stock levels it's clear there is no easy answer to that question. In either case, I've decided to shrink my list down and spread it out over a longer period of time.

Week 0 after cycle:
120g clean up crew from Reefcleaners.org. As part of the CUC they'll also be including 1 brittle and serpent star, 2 peppermint shrimp, and a florida fighting conch.

Week 2 after cycle:
So this would be the first batch of fish. I'll plan on QTing these for 4-6 weeks before introducing them to the DT on week 2 after the cycle. At the moment, it looks like I'll be getting them from vividaquariums.com.
  • One Spot Foxface Rabbit
  • Dwarf Flame Angel
  • Red Spotted Blenny
  • 2x Percula Clownfish

This is a few more fish than I'd like to do at one time however there are a few factors which have contributed to this decision. Since I'll actually be buying these 4-6 weeks BEFORE week 2 (to get them through QT) I'm limited to buying only fish since the DT won't be ready for corals or inverts yet. I needed to buy enough fish to justify the shipping costs and to meet vivid's $150 minimum for livestock. All of these will be very young fish. The Blenny is the only one over 2 inches and it might be JUST over. The rest are all listed as .75-1.5 inches which leads me to believe it should work out fine.

Week 10 after cycle:
  • Royal Gramma
  • Hi Fin Red Banded Goby and Pistol Shrimp
  • 1 Scarlet Skunk cleaner shrimp

Week 24 after cycle:
  • 5x blue green cromis
  • Purple long tentacle Anemone
  • maxima clam

So hopefully that looks better. I've removed a lot of the shrimp, the wrasse, the mandarin, and I've replaced the barred dartfish and the purple firefish with the green cromis. The cromis aren't as big as the zebra dartfish and they satisfy a couple of my needs... schooling fish, top zone swimmers, blue/green color and a bonus... cheap and hardy. They're not as unique as the dartfish, but I think I'll probably have better luck with them.

After 18mos or so I can re-evaluate. I'd certainly like to get the mandarin and maybe a wrasse as well but we'll give it a year or two to see how the tank is running. Hopefully this feels better to you guys.

Tanks Arrive!

Tanks Arrive!

Well yesterday was a big milestone day! Picked up the tank, stand and sump!

Fortunately our friend had access to a huge flatbed to take my brother and I down to pick up the tanks. Was kind of funny... I called all around town to find the best prices on the tanks/stand and found a good place in South Englewood here in Colorado. About 40min drive so not too bad.

When we drove down there, we found the shop which was in an old "historic" part of town. The kind with nice walkways, lots of trees and benches and ALL STREET PARKING! Parallel parking a two ton flatbed in one of those little parking spots wasn't gonna happen!

So we pulled around back in the alley and found a place to park. Went inside to see if they had a back entrance, which they did, but it was up a flight of stairs!

So we waited around a bit, browsing the tanks while the manager was dealing with other customers. When we were ready to take the tanks and go, we got lucky and three cars had pulled out from the street parking and our buddy was able to pull the truck right up to the front door! Whew!

Here we are arriving back home... this tank is a massive! Glad I had some young guys around to do the heavy lifting!

Here's the tank in all it's glory!
120tankingarage_zpsdb4f118a.jpg

So I wasn't thrilled with the stand, but I bought it sight unseen. It's got a huge center brace between the doors so it's a bit cramped. Even worse, it has a center brace both on the top and in the back as well. There was no way to get the 40 breeder sump in the stand without taking out one of the braces.

So I pulled the top brace off and we dropped the sump in just to get an idea what it looks like. We'll put the center brace back on, of couse, before actually setting up the tank.

In addition to all the center braces, the stand is also a couple inches shorter than I expected. It's only 27" tall rather than the typical 30" stands I've seen. My Diablo XS225 skimmer is 24" tall. It's a tight fit, but I was able to remove the cup and even pull the skimmer body through the front doors with about a 1/2" to spare! Close!

The stand is also a touch more narrow than I was hoping. In the interior of the stand I only have about 5" between the front glass of the sump and the interior frame of the stand (by the doors). I'll be using 1 1/2" plumbing on the intake for my return pump so the 1 1/2" bulkhead and elbow which will stick out the front of the central return section of the sump will take up all of that 5 inches of space! I'll need to be sure that I drill the sump high enough, and far enough to the left of the center brace of the stand to actually be able to insert the elbow into the bulkhead when we're ready to glue it together.

So here's the layout. Everything will be a tight fit but right now it all looks like it will work. I'm not certain yet if I'm going to use the big 1 1/2 true union valve mounted in front of the sump or if I go with a standard 1 1/2 ball valve, I might be able to squeeze it right in front of the pump intake on the side of the sump. The pump has it's own union collers on both intake and output so a true union valve may not be necessary. Will have to play with this a bit once I get the proper bushings to downsize from the 1 1/2" pipe to the 1" intake on the pump.
SumpFits_zps3c31372c.jpg

So that's where we're at... I've taken exact measurements now of the tank and the sump so I can order my glass and acrylic to start building baffles and the overflow boxes this week!

Moving along, slowly but surely.

I would cancel the chromis, they are not a real shoaling fish in aquariums, they will fight until there is only one left. I would get one male anthias and 3 females. Also, IME, you do not have to wait to add a shrimp, but you can if you want, they do not add too much to the bioload.

Shifted stock gears again

Shifted stock gears again

ok guys, based on the input I've received here and a couple days more reading... LOL... here's where my stock list stands today. I removed the green cromis and royal gramma and added 4 bartlett's anthias (1 male, 3 female) and after 8 months or so, if the tank is doing well I might add a wrasse.

I like the Anthia's color better than the zebra dartfish and they seem to be very good schoolers. I realize they have special feeding requirements (3-4 small feedings a day) but I think both me and my filtration should be able to keep up with that. From what I've read about the Anthias, it's best to add them to the tank before other fish. As a result I'm switching up the order I'll be adding everyone to the tank.

Let me know what you think... especially any experience you've had with the Anthias and the Clown Fairy Wrasse (aka solar fairy wrasse).

Week 0 - Clean-up Crew

Week 2
  • 1 male Bartlett Anthia
  • 3 female Bartlett Anthias
Week 10
  • 1 one-spot foxface rabbitfish
  • 1 Red Spotted Blenny
  • 1 highfin banded gobby and pistol shrimp
Week 24
  • 2 Percula Clownfish
  • 1 Flame Angel
  • 1 Maxima Clam
Week 36
  • Clown Fairy Wrasse (depending on how tank is doing)
Week 52
  • 1 Purple Long Tentacled Anemone

Looks good. Can you get the skimmer out to clean it?

Yup, I think so. It will be tight, but I was able to take the cup off without too much trouble. With the cup off, I was able to fit the body through the door. I added an extra inch to the skimmer chamber in the sump to make it a bit easier.

GO BRONCOS!!
