Well I finally got my 125 into my room...well my 55 didnt fit very well in the stand, at least to access it for maint, so we decided to break the plywood on the bottom to get an extra few inches (joes idea) well after ryans fat butt jumped on it it snapped ,we tried to pry it off but we broke the hammer tryin lol yup broke the hammer and then a few more mistakes til we realized that the plywood was half the support of the fricken stand...lovely right...so after some thinking we found a way to support the stand more then it was to begin with and made a lowes trip... after that ordeal and with the tank on the stand we pulled it away from the wall and started filling it with sand....what a dust mess that was... then started the RO unit....well since im impatient i have the good water and the excess running into the tank...cant be any worse then using regular tap water like some people do since it does run through a few of the filters if not all em (not sure). So as its filling i wanted to put the overflow on to see how much imma need for tommorrow and realize the tank isnt far enough away from the wall by at least an inch!!!...somehow by the grace of someone i was able to move the whole tank and stand! away enough to give me some room plus a little to fit it.... so now im just waiting on it to fill up.... this is mainly for joe but for all...just cause u have a crap load of rock in ur 55 dosent mean its enough for a 125...(yup u were right joe)...i dont have near enough rock....ryan if u read this im prolly gonna have to get some from ya(remember u love me) i added some of the tank water from my 55 into the tank and added some rock from one of my containers and while i still have a few more pieces in the other containers my tank is gonna be empty looking til i can get some cash together for more...neway i think thats all i got for now...ill post pics tommorrow

I have only 3 things to say
1. Slow down BAD THINGS HAPPEN FAST
2. If you are dumping the Ro and the drain water into the tank, why not just run from the sink? Ro units mostly dump the impurities that don't go through the filter down the drain line.
3. I usually wash the sand out first, gets rid of the superfine dust.

because i have had my fish in this container all weekend and i need it to fill but im at least getting some good water in there...and i have filled now 3 tanks with this sand and 1 first time i rinsed it and it didnt really make much of a difference...so i just dumped...and it was fine..just a little stuff on top of the water that i took a net to and it was good to go

Dude, finish running it from the sink, that way you can turn the hotwater on and you won't have a 50 degree tank for two days waiting for yor heater to catch up. :D

But your not. the waste water is dumping the waste back into the tank. The waste line is washing the filter and dumping the impurities back into the tank. All you are doing by running the ro unit is wearing out the filter and getting nothing for it. This will lead to an algae bloom.
Also this tank will have to cycle adding a large fish load could be real bad. If they live it will definately be stressful on the fish.

Put some of that poly pad I gave you, in your filter. it will remove some of the stuff in the RO waste water you put in the tank.

I think it looks fine. like a shallow lagoon reef system. scattered rock outcrops for corals to grow on, fish to swim around and sand sifters to... sift the sand in. a different near reef eco system. I think you should go for it. get some sand sifting gobies. a brittle star fish, nasarius snails for the sand. stuff like that. make a school of cheap but nice green chromis to swim around with the tangs.. shrimp..

You will still need a great bio filter, and better lighting. and maybe some pretty macro algea plants to help denitrate too. I can help you with that. I thimpk it's a great start for a unique looking tank eco system . you dont need the standard rock wall.

natural reefs have at least 4 different eco systems moving from deep ocean to beach. deep reef(low light), reef wall(upwelling currents for softies, filter feeders and sponges), reef top for high light acros, and lagoonal for shallow water, higher nutrient corals, fish and plants.

I will bet you got the high nutient level part down to a science. so i would go with a lagoonal system look.

What do you thimpk?

Now that was funny. You should put that in your sig line.

I'm glad you picked up on that Al, Most of us reefers are pretty good at filtration for converting tank waste to nitrates. It's the getting rid of nitrates part that is most dificult for reefers.

So anybody got ideas for what are higher nutrient loving/tolerant corals and critters? Let's give Josh some ideas on what might be good for that type of biotope.

Those in algae covered houses shouldn't throw mag floats.

I think we could all use a little more efficient nutrient export systems. In the mean time, it doesn't make your reef inferior to have higher dissolved organics.

Ken I really like the idea of having an assortment of macros in the display. I can't in my 125, because its Tang city, USA. Do you think they would fare well in my 65? It is lower light (read PC) and lower flow (3 Koralia #1's). I set it up that way for a mushroom tank. The only other corals I have are GSP's and a Torch that won't die.

I have some codium in my tank... cant really offer a big piece and its a slow grower, but its one of my favorite macros.

Codium is a hard brancher, correct? I'd love a piece, but I have very little to trade. We can work something out.

Josh,

You'll probabaly have a little cycle-stink. Keep an eye on your params, it's a big tank. A little cycle shouldn't be too bad.

Joe, the codium isnt really hard as in it has calcium like halimeda, but it is harder and a slower grower than most. Most people call it dead mans fingers. Dont worry about a trade... the piece that I have that I dont need is pretty small so its no big deal.
