125 gallon in-wall build

sun light supply sells some nice t5's retrofits with very good reflectors i would go with 4 / 4 ft actinics that way you could stager them for the full 6 ft //4 / 3 ft bulbs would work as well if space is a problem .. I love the color they give to the corals

Thanks for the tip. I already have some t5 retrofit kits from my previous system though. I love the color provided with t5's also.

That's awesome, but looking at it makes me sick that I didn't put my 180 inwall. I have a perfect wall between my office and living room that I easily could have put it in. All the maintenance would have been in the basement. Oh well, you live and learn, I thought about it like 3 days after I drilled holes in the back for plumbing, could have easily done the sides instead.

Wow I absolutely love that little sitting room right in front of the tank. The only thing I would have changed is to use a removable background, like a piece of black acrylic with hooks or something along those lines. I can imagine what a PITA its going to be to do maintenance on a tank blind. Oh well, its always something you could later, even after the tank is up and running since you have easy access to the back side.

Definitely a good idea and something I thought about along the way but a piece of black acrylic that size would have been pretty costly and money started to get tight as the build progressed. Hopefully it won't be too much of a chore. Like you said, if it is I can add one later on. Thanks for the compliment, it took me a long time to find a table the right size to go there but I finally found that one and am very happy with it.

I have a 10 gallon QT and I took a piece of cardboard cut to size and spray painted it black. When I put fish in it I just slide it behind the tank and you can't tell that the bask isn't painted, with only a 10 gallon. I think you would be able to do something like that and it would be easily removable and super cheap!!

Not a bad idea but with mine I would have to find a way to make sure that the cardboard would be mounted flush to the back, could not just be leaning to avoid all light penetration into the display area. As you can probably tell from the tank I am very much into low-impact/minimalist design.

That could easily be solved with a few pieces of scotch tape whenever you removed/reinstalled the cardboard, mine is just held on by the HOB filter used in the QT

No way I'm putting sticky residuey scotch tape on my tank, sorry very anal person lol. And I still dont think that would keep all light from entering the tank. Also though about using velcro but even seeing the velcro from the display would drive me nuts.

New fish!

New fish!

Got my first fish for my tank! A Desjardini sailfin tang, a flame hawkfish, and seven blue-green chromis. Really crappy pics but they really are beautiful fish.

Updates! Lots of pics.

Updates! Lots of pics.

I broke down my 65 gallon mixed reef (turned into a quarantine tank) and transferred the contents to my home tank. I made another pillar out of the 65 gallon rock the same as my first pillar by drilling the rock and using 1/2" cpvc pipe to connect the rocks. Pics speak louder than words so here we go:

Me drilling the rock:

Trying to get a pillar I like that doesn't wobble:

Placing a monti cap into the tank. This was my first SPS and I know they are easy to grow but it feels great to have watched it grow from a dime sized frag to a small colony:

Oh my god a severed arm!

The new pillar:

And finally a full tank shot. I will probably play around a little with the loose rock in the middle. Not 100% satisfied with that but I am really happy with how the pillar turned out.

That's it for now. Thanks for looking! More updates soon.

That's really nice! Im trying to talk my wife into letting me cut a hole in our wall! So far it's not going to well lol.. We renting to own so she said after we own but I really don't want to wait 2 more years! I also have the nice wood pannels, I told her we could take it down and cut the hole out then if we move we can just put the pannel back over the hole and they would never know! LMAO

Thanks! Hope it works out for you, I am definitely trying to do everything I want now before I settle down, I know how hard it is to convince a spouse to do these things. You can tell her that you can convert it to a bathroom later if you sell. Thats what I plan to do.
