I actually just ordered one of these. Christmas present from me to myself ha. you can run the tank just as it comes in. you may want to consider getting an upgraded pump though, depending on the flow you want...

i bought a nano skimmer that will fit in the back that's supposed to work quite well...

http://www.amazon.com/AquaticLife-Internal-Mini-Skimmer-115/dp/B001V95TZA

my lfs runs one on their zero edge tank, which is obviously over 30 gallons, and they love it.

other than that, i'd consider getting some carbon and chemipure elite/seachem purigen. i plan on using all three, actually.

With a tank this small, the debate over whether or not you need a skimmer and/or sump will never end. I chose to go with the skimmer only because the 8 gallon biocube i have now has no skimmer, and small tanks can be very finicky with water quality. I'm thinking the skimmer will help with water quality, therefore prolonging times between water changes. But hey, if you have a sump and want to use it, more power to you.

Hope that helps some.

Is this your first tank?

I may upgrade the pump as you mentioned.Yea i believe it will be a present to myself ha ha. As for the carbon, chemipure, etc.. Are you building a media rack , if so how do you plan on doing this.

Yes this is my first tank , but i have been reading for a looooong time ha ha .

I don't have a media rack for my 8 gallon. I just use sock filters for each bag in the middle chamber. But I may buy one for the 12 gallon... there's a couple sites that sell them, I just can't remember any right now ha
