12G up and running

Hey everybody I got the 12G nanocube up and running today. The water is clearing up pretty good. The temperature is maintaining about 74 degrees right now. I got the LR in there from my uncles tank. I got three hand sized pieces one of which had mushrooms on it. I will be getting one more piece of LR once they begin to break the tank down since its hidden in a not so accessible spot right now. I will post the pictures of how it looks now tomorrow. The camera batteries died when I went to DL them tonight. I still need to do some aquascaping with the rocks. Be sure to check in tomorrow for pics.

Tim, you might want to bring the temp up a few degrees, 74 is the very low end for warm water corals.

Whats the a good temperature to keep it around? Also does the led moonlighting have to stay on all night or is it just a visual looking thing thats optional? Is there any treatment I need to do to the LR to keep it healhy? One of the rocks has some mushrooms on them that I am hoping will survive do they require any special treatment? Thanks in advance. I will post pictures in a few.

moonlighting is just for asthetics. My 2.5 gallon pico tank gets upto about 84* during real hot days and the corals do fine. I keep my 125 right around 78-80*. Caleb posted a link to that is very informative on the different temps in different areas of the oceans and the impact on corals.

That can be a cool looking setup, Kevin had a 12 and it was very very nice, he had a good light, and some really nice corals and aquascaping.
Just be patient and let it mature slowly don't try to rush it or fill it up with corals and fish right away

Ya I am taking my time. The mushrooms are all thats in there for now from my uncles tank and they were free. I am going to let the tank cycle and mature like it should and hopefully I will be able to set it up like I want. I had to put the tank on my tv stand for now since it wouldn't fit on my desk. Now my tv is on my tool box in my dorm till next weekend when I get the stand built.

I was looking in the tank earlier tonight and I noticed a bunch of little red hairs growing out of one of the other LR's. They have a worm shaped sort of body of them. I am assuming they are feather dusters, but who knows. I will post pictures tomorrow.

I picked up two blue leg hermit crabs. I got them for $2.00 since they only charged me for one.

I found another growth today that look like possibly larger feather dusters that I over looked before. I noticed that there are these clear/white thread size things on places of the rock, but I dunno if they are moving or if the current is moving them. Any ideas? I would try to get a picture, but I dunno if it would show.

Live Rock is full of all kinds of cool things, I have even setup small tanks with no rock and stuff just appears, it's cool to see. It's probably a worm of some sort.
I saw a display at an aquarium one time, they had a patch of reef, 12" x 12" and then showed all the snails and crabs they pulled out of that patch afterwards.
There must have been 100 snails and 100 crabs, and another 100 misc stars and whatnot.

You can see one of the (worms if thats what it is) I am talking about in this photo on the right. I also saw today that on that same LR near some of them there was a set of my hermit crabs legs laying there. Will his legs grow back or do I have a gimp in my tank now? Thanks in advance!

Leg is probably from molting.

The legs I saw were from my new hermit crab, not the worm things I saw. Anyway doing the first water change on the tank this weekend and hopefully picking up some coral to add to it.

This just happened to the wifes Hermit, we believe that it was with a vicious fight with the Hawkfish. Seems the hawk swooped down and snatched the leg off the Hermit. Or it was from molting. I like the other story better. I'm hoping the hermit will grow a new limb, poor One Armed Bandit!

LOL. Well they are the only things in the tank besides the coral so no predator problems. Do you have to change the shells for the crabs? The lady at the pet store told me yes and was trying to sell me those decorated hermit crab shells. I was like well I will see what happens. LOL Also because I don't have any other fish in the water do I need to supply some food for the hermit crabs?
