13" x 13" x 20" High

Rhinecanthus

Looking to enter the world of seahorses or pipefish!

Tank is 13"x13" fooprint and 20" high.

Any ideas on inhabitants for such a tank? About 15gallons.

Tank has a corner overflow and I was thinking of a Mag 2 return pump from the sump which gives me a calculated 140gph. I would have a ball valve on there to better adjust the flow.

Lighting would be a 5700K power compact and I would plan on growing appropriate macro algae in the tank.

Thanks!

Thats another question...what would be an appropriate temp range? Is there somewher I could find a temperature listing for the different species?

H. kuda are smaller than H. erectus, which are some of the biggest that are commonly available. Truly, try to find H. barbouri. Barbouri are subtropical to tropical, temperatures from 70-74F seem to be the most commonly used for them that I see. Pledo will likely have more extensive advice though. :)

Some of the older information out there will show higher temps then are currently recommended. Recently, it's been pretty much agreed by most keepers that the temps should be somwhat lower - bacteria thrive at higher temps. Never over 75-76 although some of the older info says up to 80.

Barbs normally stay smaller than erectus. Some Kudas stay fairly small, but are about the same range as the barbouri. Both Barbs and Kudas are available CB from an Aquaculture facility at seahorsesource.com

I like to keep temps on the lower end of the spectrum to inhibit bacteria growth, 70-77 is an acceptable range, like I said I like the lower spectrum. I found a clip on fan to be effective at dropping a tank temp up to 7 degrees F. I have my reidi tank down to 71F now even with the 6 wpg of light.

Sarah, you flatter me. :)

IMO, 15 gallons is too small for most seahorse species, especially if you have any of it taken up with LR or LS. Maybe you should just stick with the dwarf pipes. Dwarf seahorses would fit, but I think everything else is wrong for them - too high flow and lighting.
