13x13x22 as a starter reef setup?

I've had this ~15 gallon 13x13x22" tank setup as a freshwater tank for several years. Just a hang on the back filter for some hardy freshwater types.

Once I get moved after the holidays I really want to get back into reefing. I know the adage is to go as big as you can afford, but do you all think I'd be well served by setting this small tank up as a mini-reef just to get my feet wet (so to speak)?

And if so, what kind of filtration would you think would be best?

Thanks!

I have no doubt you could set up that tank to keep something. All you need is clean, warm, water that moves in appropriate volumes and lighting.

There are lots of options for filtration. You could have none at all and do water changes every day, or have every filter/reactor there is. Everyone will fall somewhere in the middle.

What are you going to keep? Are you going to have a sump? Are you trying to keep everything internal or hang on the back?

It's purely theoretical at this point. Assuming my job interview goes well in a couple of weeks, I won't even be moving until after the first of next year, so I'm just sort of casting around for ideas right now.

Just remember at that small of a size you'll be very limited in stocking choice.

The rock will be your main filtration, you may choose a HOB skimmer & filter for carbon/polishing water. A small powerhead will also be needed.

I realize it'll be very limited as far as stocking. I'm sort of thinking out loud about using it as a way to get my chops in order to graduate to something bigger. I could potentially then use this little 15 as a QT or maybe a refugium in the future.

My fantasy (this week) is a huge L shaped drop off reef in a peninsula orientation, with a dedicated pump/sump room behind it :)
