14 Biocube obtained

Hello all,

Last time I kept an aquarium bio-balls were still in. I have since gotten a job after grad school and was given a biocube 14.

Set up:

Tank is cycled now. The lights are Ecoexotic Panorama pros that have both white and blue lights. They guy put 3 of them in there. One of them is pointed in toward the tank and obviously blocked by the cover. The pump is stock and I have a heater. Tank goes from 78-79 Day night. I have 15-18 lbs of live rock in the display.

My sump in the back has the heater in compartment 1, live rock and purigen in compartment two and the pump in compartment three.

Livestock:

Candy Cap Monti frag from LiveAquaria, mushrooms, Xenia from live aquaria. Then one clown and one damsel and one shrimp.

20 blue leg hermits and 1 Turbo snail.

Questions:

1) Is 1 gallon water change a week good? So far Nitrates have been kept down this way.

2) Do you have any other recommendations? I can make a media basket but have read live rock (not rubble) works quite well.

3) Do I need another powerhead?

4) How often should I feed? I have been doing every other day.

5) Any other tips or advice?

Thanks,

oysterjake

Hi Jake..

1. You should be doing at least a 10% water change every week

2. Rock rubble will work..

3. Another small powerhead wouldn't hurt placed close to bottom of the tank

4. Some fish are fine feeding every other day, some require multiple times a day. Research your fish.

5. Sounds like for the most part you've got things under control, do you just plan on keeping soft corals? That light should be fine if so.

Thanks Valenini89!

I have one candy cap (montipora) placed high and only plan to have soft corals (other than that). It and my other corals were all aquacultured (as were my fish which I shall research). My nitrates have been 5-10 at the most so I'll plan to keep doing 10%. I appreciate your advice a lot!

I noticed my nitrates have been getting to 5 (not 10). I did a water change and they are back at 0 (or at least undetectable by my test kit). I will just make sure they do not exceed this 5 ppm mark and do water changes accordingly. I think it ends up being exactly what you suggest for that balance.

I did notice my dKH is 15 though. Not sure why so high.
