14k or 10k ?

Largely a matter of opinion, and which color is "better" is hugely subjective. Generally, 14k will be more blue, but there can still be some variation depending on specific bulb and ballast combination used. The average 10k bulbs will generally provide higher PAR than the average 14k, but again, there are huge differences from one bulb brand to another - the highest output 14k may be better than the lowest 10k. Still, many people think corals "look" better under 14k, but grow faster under lower k bulbs.

I find that my 10k Ushios tend to wash out my colors a little bit when they're on, I'm thinking about trying something in the 14k range in the near future. Leanings towards the Phoenix 14k, although Reeflux may be worth a look as well.

There are some great links at the top of the equipment forum. PAR numbers for various lamp/ballast/reflector combinations, tank shots showing overall color, etc. You can spend hours there soaking up information, and still not have a clue what to get next. :D

Thanks for the info, I will try the bulbs tonight and take pictures and post them... I think that would be the best way to compare them.. Thank man for being quick on the responses.

Yea Jeff, I hear you. I spend so much damned time just lurking around these forums, it's almost saddening.... but I learn so much!!!

instrance, which 14k bulbs are they? I think the stock coralife bulb on their 150w Aqualight Pro that I just bought is too yellow. It makes my tank's algae problem look waaaay out of proportion :p

I'm thinking of the 14k phoenix or 12k reeflux or something. Something to add more blue and have less yellow!

Actinic supplementation is always going to make your corals "pop" more than just halides do... It's up to you and the color that you get from the bulb. I have noticed my corals coloring up much more though with actinic bulbs than they were w/o them, but many things have changed in my tank since the addition of the VHOs....

I have 4-250w -14k hamiltons on my 120x36x30 tank without antinics and wouldnt go any other way. I save electric by not using antics and love the color. Just like jeff said its your tank you have to find your happy place. I did everything on my tank with watt useage in mind. if I did antics I would need 8x54 extra wattage

I run 3 400w 20k +actinics. Yes FPL hurts me but that was not a consideration when the project started. I love the deepwater blue look and I'm willing to sacrifice a little growth vs d above.

Hmm, you have all made good points looking at the 14k right now. It looks great! All the coral looks better. My Bubble does not seem to be extending as much.. I think it could be because of the new lights........ maybe? Lets see how it goes. I will take pictures of the new lights. I will post it tonight.

I run a 14k 150 watt phoenix and it rocks just right! I was wondering about lights about a month ago and got mine in the mail not to long ago 14k is nice in a reef tank!
