$15 PVC Overflow

pvtschultz: when you said the intake and outake should be the same hight did you mean the elbow that you connect the surface skimmer pipe to. Just want to be sure so I build it right.

This is the proper layout of a overflow. The pipe is 3/4"

I have an Eheim 1260 hooked up as a return and I have it backed off just a hair to keep a steady balance at 4 ft. with 3/4 return line.


I am figuring 400 GPH, maybe a tad more

i get it, very good idea. that takes a while to figure it all out, but the above pic makes it easy.

I just made mine a double so that it would hang on the back of the tank and I would have double the flow

about 800 gph

the above is from when I was wetworx101 over at nano-reefs. I made 3/4" and 1" versions of the surface skimmer I show in the link. My main reason for the link however is to show the surface skimmer assembly that I made up with a piece of 2" pvc, endcaps, and a nylon bolt. Much nicer looking in the tank.

That is an awsome design Herbert...I guess it would take an engineer to come up with something that incredibly simple and effective...I'l almost there. lol. I think that I am going to build that one...very nice.

Ok.. now I need a bit of assistance, but first, this has been an excellent post. The overflow and subsequent follow-ups, questions, answers and IMO comments has been better than an actual lecture...Great JOB!!

Now for my question. I want to paint this so it does not look so glaring in the tank. What paint should be used and if not paint, what? Also if there is a brand name and/or source that would be excellent.
