$15 PVC Overflow

I wish someone would give pipe lenghts to the http://www.nd.edu/~lego/grp2/www/reef_diy.htm project. I tried emailing that guy but it was returned as if that address wasn't valid.

That design is great because it makes it easy to hang on the tank and its easy to increase flow easily by adding additional ins and outs. With this same design you could make one to take up the whole backside of the tank and would easily accomodate any flow rate.

Again though... I wish someone would post pipe lenghts because I don't really feel like experimenting atm :P Too much going on and would rather just follow a step by step :)

Wishful thinking... i know ;)

tboned, you are my personal hero for today, and probably for a long time in regards to this tank.

Ther is no way we could convince my parents to let me drill the tank, and given that we only paid $25 for our 150, if it cracked, we'd likely just sell whatever was left.

We had tried many other PVC overflow solutions, to no avail. They either lost the siphon while running or didnt keep the prime, and would have caused disaster during a power outtage.

Then I found yours. We modified it a tad, using 1.5 and 2 inch PVC to hopefully handle a little more flow. We also added teeth to the intakes, and let me tell you, this is an amazing work of engineering.

The valve on top isnt necessary, but it was used on an older attempt at an overflow, and I think it looks neat. Sort of like a mad scientist project type thing.

So thank you for the detailed instructions and amazing work. It restarts perfectly during a simlated (and hopefully the real deal) power outtage, and I think it will be even better once we get the aqualifter pumps instead of the powerhead.

So was anyone ever able to get pipe lenghts and such?

I built one last night, but it breaks siphon when it runs to level. I think I need to put in a few intakes w/ slots to increase the water level to that of the backside of the manifold. Not an engineer, so just rying to copy what I saw and hope I got it right.

Are you talking the Craigs Reef one? That one looks cool on top of apparently working. I just added 2" to all of the lengths on the one posted on the first page to accomodate larger piping.

Tried to post a few pics, but looks like the RC upload numbers have been exceeded.

Anyone tell me where a good place to store and link a few pics is?

put it on the tank, fill tank up so it goes over teh inside tube, connect plumbing to sump, hold finger over the hole on the highest point and suck on the check valve untill you taste that salty goodness.

I think Im going to give this a try. Any tips on enhancements to the original design? Im thinking of going with 1" pipe inside the water and 2" outside. Im looking to get about 300 gph from one side for a total of 600 for both.

Ours still needs some fine tuning, but with a powerhead sucking air out of the lines, we pull about 270gph with 1.5" inside, and 2" for the cross and down pipes. We only have one though, and essentially, with how we have it set up, the second intake is a tad bit higher, so its a safety check for us. We'll be lowering it, and hopefully getting a bit more flow. The Mag 24 is dialed back nearly the whole way. That's getting sold, and a smaller model in its place.

Awesome plan!

Awesome plan!

This plan of both the Pretzel as well as Craig's plan are absolutely awesome!

I am wondering if the following changes would make sense?

Instead of the two inlet tubes which are of small diameter, why not make a connection between the left and right tubes horizontally, eliminate the middle inlet ( in Craig's design), and cut slits into the horzontal tube, thereby eliminating problems with clogging?

I am not sure if I wil be able to past the picture into this post ( haven't tried it before). If the picture doesn't make it, I sthink you all will get the gest of my thinking.

Your thoughts?

OK, tried to get the image into the post which did not work. I read the help section, but it only allows for 'linking' to an image. How does one get the image intot he body of the post?
