OK, long story short. I wanted a new bulb for our frag tank, so i ordered one of these, tossed in a couple frags and they look awesome white :(

Come to find out, the aqualight by coralife is NOT uv protected and neither is a 14k Ushio.

The bulb was bought about 3 weeks ago with 5hrs a day on it. I will dig up receipt. From marine depot.

So i have an option to sell the bulb for $50 shipped or find a piece of UV glass to hang under it.

looking for recommendation to find glass locally or a buyer for the bulb.

Ben

Hey Ben
Contact Glass City here in town, they can order a piece cut to your specs for a decent price. I may have one that is UV protected you can use til you get it in. I will check tomorrow for you.

Got plenty, they have a disappearing act going on, now you see them now you don't. Actually no I don't have that many Donovan is benefiting from them all. Steroids for corals as Joe put it.

As far as I know all DE bulbs require a UV shield glass. Double ended bulbs only has one glass envelope unlike the SE bulbs which have an outer as well as an inner envelope. HTH

there are some that have uv glass over the element. not your name brands though. i went through this awhile back and ran one that was uv protected. no uv glass installed on the canopy and things look good but i was not happy with the color. so i got a used bulb from geprge to compare colors and i forgot to take it out after it cooled down and the timer turned it back on the next day and bleach city. byw way ben pods are in and i also got the drift wood. left you a message on monday. let me know

Joe,
i called you back that night!!

coralife bulbs ARE uv protected, (same as the fixture company). I called and talked to a "tech". I ASSUMED the glass provided with my fixture was for UV protection, not just for splash.

AH HA!!!! that's what's frying the stuff in my fuge! i WAS LIKE......DANG! looks like UV burn.....but the bulb isn't cracked!

(my first DE bulb) boy am I glad I just put the LEDs on over all the new micros! I'm supposing the current outer orbit glass panels are UV then.....so I should be able to just use those, right? I stole the 150W halide from a 36" 2x150W halide + 4 T5 fixture.......that be the sace....I should be able to put the insert and be ok after that?
I'm running the pheonix 14K now..........oh crap....but maybe the bulbs that came with the fixture are UV protected and I still need some UV glass?

didn't mean to hijack.....if my glass is UV, then I might have a spare!

Yeah D the glass with the fixture is UV protected. If the bulb has UV block it will state it on the bulb otherwise it is not.
Guess you dont need a bulb temporarily huh Ben? Find a piece of glass I take it!

George, i took it you were going to look for a piece of glass. I have an old 20k i put back in for now.

Juice, they have 3 pieces, i keep meaning to call them and see how big they are and probably order one.

I meant a bulb Ben sorry.
Did you try Glass City here in town, thats where I got my piece from, tempered, UV protected.
Hope this helps

I have one in my truck that I could "loan" you if you are in a jam (the UV glass piece)

I emailed marine depot about it, and they said that they could overnight one if I was in a jam......I put the glass on the halide in my frag fuge, and PRESTO! no more issues!

I feel like such an idiot! even while thinking.....man that looks like UV burn! ......the UV glass never even crossed my mind!

We understand you are slow D......don't worry not too many people know!
Kinda like my cuts...LMAO
