150 Gallon Build Thread

:spin1:I was wondering how you were doing!!

I figured, nothing bad had happened in a while so maybe I'm in the clear now. Corals are growing. Polyps are waving in the current..

I got the Android 4.4.1 update on my Nexus 5 - which was all about making the camera better.

While I wait for an actual macro lens, I tried out the cell phone. I'm impressed!

A monti frag from copps. I'd highly recommend his frag threads if you're looking for well priced healthy colorful frags. AND there's a thread he just posted. Get yourself a holiday treat! It's worth it!

My panamanian zoos that didn't open for about a month when I got them. Doing great now. (uh oh, now that I said that we can expect a total meltdown..)

It wouldn't be a bunch of cell phone pics without filters ;)

The Nexus 5 may not have the best camera, but it sure seems to take decent macro shots of fish tanks! We all know how hard these can be to get, and these are more or less right off the camera app. Maybe not as sharp as a real camera could get, and for sure not as "close in" as you could get with a real macro, but I'm still impressed!

The other update is an order from Unique Corals that arrived yesterday. Got a nice Green/Golden Millepora, an A. tenuis that came in white/pale blue (fingers crossed and not reported as dead yet), another Acanthastra echinata to put back where my other one did great, and a Cyphastrea because they're super cool.

I also picked up a frogspawn thinking that maybe my clowns would like something like that to hang out in rather than the zooanthus..

I couldn't help myself.. had to get some more frags from Copps.

In my rebuild I'm going with frags more than colonies. It'll take longer for them to grow out, but I think in the long run I'm going to end up with more interesting textures and shapes. Plus - all captive bred means less impact on the ocean!

Of course, I've been eyeing a 260g custom tank from AGE... just gotta save up the $5,000 it was quoted.. Then I could have a nice closed loop drilled up from the bottom and an Achilles tang. Thinking a 6' x 2' tall x 3' wide footprint would be really cool. The 3' front to back would give lots of neat aquascaping opportunities. Someday!

I think so too. I'm due for a water change today and a Ca test. I took my Calcium reactor offline a while back but I'm thinking I might have enough stuff using ca/alk in the tank now that my weekly 30g water change might not be enough to replace everything. We'll find out.. it'd be a nice problem to have again ;)

Something happened with the hosting. Hmm.

I'm not really going bigger, but it would be nice. Someday :)

The thing I'd really like is a taller stand that makes it easier to get my skimmer out for cleaning..

Here's a few photos from the tank recently. (and one, not from the tank..)

I'm at the bottom of my bucket of NeoMarine salt that I bought when Marine Depot was out of the DD H2Ocean Mag+ salt I had been using.

So now.. should I switch back to the H2Ocean salt, keep using NeoMarine, or switch allll the way back to the Tropic Marin Pro Reef salt I used for years?

Decisions decisions. Salt is a religious topic it seems.. but I've had decent luck with all three. I used Tropic Marin for years, then switched to the DD salt for the added magnesium. Then Marine Depot was out of stock, so I got two buckets of the NeoMarine salt from Brightwell... any opinions?

I'm doing well with tropic Marin. I only buy the 50g box and only make 50 g at a time. For some reason when I used the 200 g buckets and mixed 50 g portions at a time, I found the chemistry to vary every time I mixed. I figured it was because of settling in the large bucket.

I actually found another bucket of the NeoMarine salt.. so I've got some time. It would be nice to build a station in the garage to where I could mix and entire bucket at once but I'm not sure if it'd go bad as I slowly use it 40/50 gallons at a time.

If you drill holes in descending "S" or snake pattern from the top down you can quiet it up. Also, there is no set size for the drill hole on top (vent). You can go bigger and they have brass valves at hardware stores that can screw in if you choose a large hole.

. this is supposed to look like a descending spiral of holes lol

After attempting to order a pair a couple years ago and having that order cancelled due to illness, I'll finally be getting a Tinkeri butterflyfish tomorrow morning!

I'm so excited to have this fish arrive - it's been a dream of mine for a long time.

Tinkeri butterflyfish sure are inquisitive! It's constantly checking out everything in it's tank. Nipping at live rock, and eating a bit of what I feed it. Not a lot - but it's only been here 12 hours.

If all goes well, we'll get it into our display soon.

I'll see what I can do today! I've got to do some car work, but perhaps this afternoon I can grab one. It's quite beautiful, and seems not to want to hide at all - all good traits.

- edit -

It'll hide when you stick a big camera next to the tank. Otherwise it's in exploring mode. I'll try later :)

This one had been there a while - it was heavily discounted. Still, the single most expensive thing in my entire tank. I'm still working on a decent photo..

We added the butterfly today and in the larger tank it seemed to be much more happy with our cell phone ;)

Unfortunately our white cheek tang made it his or her life's mission to rain terror down upon the butterfly.

So it's now in solitary.

We also got about fifty pounds of Marco rocks to add to our tank. I think with solitary for a few weeks while the rocks get seeded and then a new rock structure we'll try the tang again.

Pro tip. Catch a tang by getting some black netting like for a screen. Drape it down the center of your tank and weigh down with rocks. Go about your normal tang catching routine only this time when it bolts it'll run into the screen and literally catch itself for you :)

I'd recommend the four foot PowerModule for a five foot tank. I've been considering upgrading to a 48" LED PowerModule myself.

I really liked the Kessil lights but I think on a tank this size you'd need several to get good coverage without harsh shadows.
