150 Gallon Build Thread

Only problem about getting fish / corals delivered is you must take a day off from work to sign for their delivery correct? Do they offer Sat or weekday night deliveries? Thanks..

-Chris

They do have saturday delivery, though it's an additional fee. Sometimes I'll do that - usually with fish, since they seem a bit "more touchy". Otherwise I usually have the items shipped to my work, and head home for lunch and take care of the acclimation over my lunch break.

I guess living close to work and having a flexible employer is good for me in that way.

Honestly, the high quality you'll get from the divers den and the great selection are almost impossible to match - and I think that makes the additional price of saturday delivery worth it. They really do a lot to ensure that they never ship a sick or injured specimen.

I was informed today that one of the Tinkeri pair passed away yesterday, so they've cancelled the order for me.

I'll probably be trying again with another pair once they get a nicely colored one back onto the divers den.

I did get a couple good photos of my anthias though. The first is of my male..

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/30998766@N03/4274967205/" title="Evansi Anthias (Male) by inktomi, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2731/4274967205_48ebd7685e.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="Evansi Anthias (Male)" /></a>

and then this is a female..

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/30998766@N03/4275712008/" title="Evansi Anthias (Female) by inktomi, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4011/4275712008_a9433cda35.jpg" width="500" height="334" alt="Evansi Anthias (Female)" /></a>

You can see the differences pretty easily in these photos.

Ink, you've got me sold on the DD. I think thats great that they hold quality and health above all. I have yet to find a LFS that does that, they just want your money as soon as possible. There are 2 that are decent when it comes to that but I like the Divers Den much better and I plan on ordering something from there soon. Are their shipping costs outrageous?

Shipping is about what you'd expect for overnighting a box of water. I think it's 34.99 standard.

I usually don't buy just a $30 thing from them because of the shipping. I lump together a couple corals to spread out the cost. I've only ever bought my trio of anthias from them as far as fish - but they were all eating and healthy and seem to have kept up their health in my care.

As of now, I'm planning on getting all of my remaining fish from the divers den..

- Tinkeri pair
- Perhaps a small tang, if they ever put a powder brown up
- Mandarin goby
- Perhaps a goby/shrimp pair

and that's it for my future fish additions.

I added an Acro. robusta today that I found for a good price. I love the coralites on it!

I rearranged some rock today, but just a bit. I think it's coming along nicely.

So I'm thinking about adding three more anthias to the tank, assuming I can get another trio of females.

One of my females jumped out a few weeks ago, but otherwise they're all doing very well. They're quite well filled out, and very active - so I hope that they're going to be doing well for the long term. I've had them about 6 months now.

Do you find your SPS getting bleached by the ATI"s? I can't figure out if sps are too high or too low, or whether my photo period is too long.

So far I have nothing but good things to say about the ATI lights I'm using. I have good color, etc.

Recently, I had a bad Phosphate spike, and that bleached out a lot of things - but I've fixed it and color is coming back (better than ever, actually).

I'd probably think about the bulbs you are using. I run my lights from ~8am till ~7pm or so - so 11 hours give or take. I wonder if the bulb composition would make any difference? Maybe you have more of the "white" end than I do?

(what part of the color spectrum leads to bleaching, I wonder..)

Hello everyone!

Sorry for the long delay, and lack of photos, etc. Sorry! I've been very busy working on my private pilot's license, which has taken up a lot of my time. That's given my corals time to grow in and color up - which they've done quite nicely.

I don't have any good photos at the moment, but I promise that I'll get them in the next few days. I'm heading out of town this weekend, so it'll probably be early next week.

Recent additions to the tank (well, in the last few months..) include:

- An additional 2 female Evansi Anthias
- A Moorish Idol (which has gained a lot of weight and seems healthy.. fingers crossed)
- Acropora loripes
- A couple frags of magenta A. milliepora
- A frag that has a light blue flesh with bright green polyps.
- An orange / black tuxedo urchin

I'll have photos of all or most of these for you when I can get them taken. The moorish idol seems to be doing well - it eats everything I put in, from high quality pellets, to the mix of frozen that I feed twice daily. I also add vitamins (Selcon / Zoe / Garlic) to the food about every other day, and I alternate what I add so that they get a little bit of everything. I think that this is the 'best bet' for meeting my fish's nutrition requirements.

My Evansi Anthias have been going through their courting behavior - I think. Around lights off, with just the actinics on, the male will quickly circle a female. It's interesting to watch, and I can only think he's trying to court her. I'm not sure what to do to get them to actually spawn - and I'm nearly certain I wouldn't be able to raise the fry anyway - but a very interesting behavior to see. I think I'm doing something right with these anthias!

Finally! An Update!

So I picked up an iPhone 4 this week, and.. since it can do HD video... I thought I'd try posting some video rather than static photos.

View the video on YouTube
(You'll want to select the HD version, it really is worth the wait for it over the SD ones).

It seems like the iPhone 4 is a pretty good little video camera. This movie wasn't edited at all - just a few different shots strung together.

Also - does anyone know if we can embed the youtube player here?

tagging along...

I like your plumbing.
3759502012_8a6b0c8512.jpg

I have a similar 150 that I'm building up, with the same Panworld pump. Can you tell me more specificly what you used?

Is that 3/4in or 1/2in spaflex?

The unions... obviously double or true unions. Threaded or slip though?
That is 100% cleaner than the hose-barb setup I was using before.

It's all 3/4 inch piping. One thing though - I sort of wish I had used a larger return pump.

I'd also like more than just the two returns.. but that's just because I think I need more flow. Done again, I'd want the two returns like I have now - along with two more drilled into the back of the tank. They would all be 1.5", and I'd use a Reeflo dart or something along those lines and possibly through a SCWD.
