150 Gallon Tank Build!

Last night I added 10 micro sized dwarf blue leg hermits. I SWEAR they never stopped moving for a couple hours. Fascinating. I know it was a little early, but couldnt help it lol

Very nice build. Read everything you can on here especially the stickies. Then 3 months in - read them again! Even after years in the hobby we can sometimes forget the basics and bad habits form. Will be watching this one!

no pressure lol. This is by FAR the best website for reefing on the web. Ive been reading it on and off for at least 3 years now.

Im picking up one of the Tunze osmo top offs on Tuesday.

Today i got a 7g container for my top up (food grade) as well as a 50g food grade container for my water change water (to hold premixed saltwater) It comes with a ball valve and a locking cap to prevent evaporation.

This hobby is very exciting. Even watching the sparkles on the water in an essentially empty tank is relaxing.

I look forward to actually listening to you all and learning, and learning....... etc

oh. Update for day 12.

The glass is covered in little white critters. They are very tiny, but quick. The back glass is also covered in what looks like bubbles, but I believe its pods. Also saw some tiny white worms on the glass.

There is what I believe to be a small feather duster living on the sand in what appears to be a rubble shell made from the aragonite bottom material.

The brown algae is really coming along strong now.

There is LIFE!!!

Sorry.

Ammonia is .25 (API kit.... so maybe zero) Nitrite is 0 (baby blue) and Nitrates are 20. I retested to make sure.

So am I cycled?

I used 34 lbs of cured live rock, 97 lbs of dry rock and about 30 lbs of rock that was in a reef tank but has been dry for about a year.

Is that possible to cycle this fast? I did add some gravel from an established tank.

Suddenly this morning there was an explosion of pods on the glass and the last couple days the brown algae took off and is all over my sand and some of the dead rock.

Please explain this to me

Pods and algae are a natural part of the cycle and will be there until there is something else to eat it (fish/snails) or compete with it (macroalgae/coralline algae). Your tank sounds cycled, but remember each new addition will spike the cycle somewhat. Kick *** tank, BTW!!!

Remember each thing you add causes a mini cycle. Add an animal and the liverock/sand will build up the bacteria to bring the ammonia/nitrates/nitrites to zero. Ammonia becomes Nitrite becomes Nitrate (I might have Nitrate and Nitrite backwards)

I added a torch coral today. Its a very cool green with a few distinct heads. Ill take a pic tomorrow once the lights are on and the light is white.

It was closed right up tight for about an hour or so and then opened right up. What a beautiful coral!

Here are some pics of my limited inventory lol

It was open more when the lights were bright

And my favorite fish joined the team. A blue throat. I bought it as a female for $40. It's a MALE. AWESOME

Yay! I'm excited for you. How big is the trigger he looks so tiny? Keep the pics coming, but avoid the temptation to overstock!! :)

trigger is maybe 3" or 4". all I have right now is a trigger and 2 tiny clowns and a really tiny fox face. Thats it for a while. The trigger is actually out having a party all the time!

Here is an update for Jan 27.

I havent dosed any more calc, but am testing it daily or every other day. it tends to drop by 20 point a day. Im going to try to dose it 2 x a week to keep it around 420-450.

I have now added a Royal Blue (Hippo) Tang at 2-3" and a Naso. He is very small. I know how big they can get, and am aware that down the road he may have to go if I dont get a bigger tank.

Everything is out and swimming now.

I have added another small torch and a beautiful "lobe" brain coral. It more of a rainbow, and the torch has bright peach tips, and 2 small zoo frags.

Looks like a couple of my mushrooms let go from the group, so I will have to take a look for them tomorrow in there

I definitely like the brighter coloured corals that sway.

Can you have too many of that family of coral? How fast do they grow. Ill be starting to feed them 2 x a week - baby brine shrimp is what I have so far.

Feather dusters are popping up around the tank (not aptasia yet!) and I believe there is green coraline coming in now on the higher rocks.

I will try to get a tank shot tomorrow.

One MP40 comes in tomorrow (ebay) and Im on the hunt for another.

Im trying to take my time, but its so hard not to just walk in and buy up the store (my wife is impressed at my control lol) and load the corals in

Tank looks awesome, but I would cool it on the fish for a month or so. You added a lot of livestock all pretty close to each other, could be dangerous. I would also look into setting up a small quarantine tank because the last thing you want to do is add another fish in a month and have them bring something into your tank and have everyone get it.

Read the stickies on this forum, so much info in the first few posts of ecach (as well as the rest of the thread) and itll help you have a greater understanding of your tank and how to do everything the safest way, for you fish and your wallet!

I was going to QT the fish, but i have read so much about them, with so many opinions, that I decided against it. Thats why I added so much livestock together. I figured if one got sick, before I had too much coral, I would QT them all together.

Im done with fish for at least a month.

My skimmer is pulling out the most nasty brown junk now. Glad to have that finally dialled in.

I bought a couple of used Ecotech Marine Vortech MP40s off ebay the last couple days. Got one with the older controller (MP40w) for 225 and an MP40w ES last night for 271.

The one I just got in definitely need the maintenance done on the wet side. Its a little loud.

The other hasnt arrived, but I will assume it needs it too.

Still, its less than Half price, even with buying the new ES controller for the one I have here.

Fish are definitely way happier with the increased flow
