Rich, The mudding is not as bad as sanding the ceiling.

I hate painting only cause I suck so bad, I don't know why I can do anything but when I put paint on a wall it looks like crap.

Oh well I gotta clean up and prep for paint.

Hey Greg,

Consider a faux finish, like a glaze coat over a basic paint color. There is really no way to screw it up and it hides all sorts of imperfections that would normally show up in just paint. The ralph lauren antique leather collection at home depot is really awesome and fits right in with the british colonial theme.

Christy,

I just got home from Lowes with 2 gals of paint and now you have me thinking ........looks like you a little late with the good ideas.

The texture will hide any imperfections that might be there, but the walls were strait and the seams perfect. I didn't like hiding all my work with the texture but I like the look.

Well the ceiling is painted and its time to do the walls. I have a nice buff color that works well with the decor.

Ill post more pics tonight.

Ok its all finished for now, paint is done but tomorrow when I have better light Ill check for spots that need to be touched-up.

In the morning I'll pickup the flooring and hope to have it in by the end of the weekend.

Here is the almost finished room.

And don't forget the fan, I have still have to order the Dehumidistat to control it.

Greg,

The paint looks great. I must commend you on your taste. Of course, its easy for me to like the colors since the red and beige are nearly identical to the colors in our kitchen/den. :D

Regarding the wood floor - make sure you acclimate the wood inside your house for at least 48 if not 72 hours. I've had a number of flooring cases over the years and can tell you that this is a step you do not want to skip since we live in ultra humid Florida.

Keep the pics coming. Its looking awesome! Jeff's not gonna want to hear this, but you really have me wanting to start on another DIY project - bathrooms are next in our house. :p

Christy, Thanks it’s actually a terracotta and buff :) I planned on letting the wood sit for at least 3 days before I lay the floor down and there will be at least 2 days of prep to the slab first. Jeff's probably wont mind hearing it, but he’s not going to want to do it. Bathrooms are a pain, mine are the last on the list.

I went out looking for hard wood flooring but of course Lumber liquidators was out of stock of the .99 per SF flooring I wanted to use, so I didn't get the hard wood today, so I decided to head to Aquarium Architecture to check out the corals before I went home and finished cleaning up my mess.

As usual I couldn’t help myself and got a few new frags to add to the list; unfortunately I don’t have the 150 up and running or I would have gotten more. Chris always has the best looking live stock around and is getting a shipment in tomorrow so I’m going back for more.

This is what I got today.
Acropora millepora, ORA Blue millie
Acropora tortousa, ORA Blue tort
Acropora sp., White W/Blue tip could be A. valida it’s a Chris Jessen limited edition
Acropora sp, Blue W/ Fuzy beige polyps could be A. abrolhosensis
Acropora sp., Green W/ Blue tip

The American DJ power center that I ordered came in to day and I think it will make the electrical in the stand a lot easier to manage.

Here is a little room update. I was going to in stall hard wood but I just couldn’t see putting that much work and money into wood and have it buckle up if it got wet and it will get wet on occasion. Since I couldn’t get the cheap wood and everything else was going to be $3.50 per Sq/Ft plus vapor barrier and glue at another $3.50 per Sq/Ft. I decided to go with tile because of the obvious reasons and it will be 1/3 the coast of hard wood, it should come in at a bout $3.00 per Sq/Ft total.

The old vinyl is up and I used Jasco adhesive remover to get up the old glue. After a good scrubbing it will be time to start laying the tile.

Well it’s Sunday and all the normal stuff is done.

The water tests for the 65 are done and the #s are:

Ca 480
Alk 3.2 meq/l 9Dkh
Mg 1365

My alkalinity is still dropping. I added a 2.8 tsp of baking soda last week to raise the Alk and had to add 3.2 tsp today. It looks like I need to mix up some more 2 part if I’m going to keep it balanced.

Lately (since the Ocellaris moved in to the RBTA) I have been witness to WWIII. It has been a total combat zone in there; the Ocellaris have gone insane claiming the whole tank as theirs. The Poor Skunks have no safe zone and they are getting picked on by the much smaller Ocellaris from both ends, the Ocellaris are not just darting out for the frontal attack but one will shoot out and the other will circle behind and corner one of the skunks. Between the 4 of them there is not a fin in tact. The Skunks are much larger and have only been defending themselves, and the Ocellaris are showing the most damage but are relentless in their attacks.

The only cool thing about this is the Sail fin tang with his vertical stripes officiates the battle, if it is just a squabble he pays no mind, just swimming between them as a reminder to be good neighbors. If it escalates he darts in between the 2 pairs and flares as if saying foul 2 minute penalty.

I made a fresh batch of Randy’s 2 Part on Monday because the Alkalinity part was not working. I didn’t realize how bad it was until I added the new batch and a large white cloud appeared in the sump, I had forgotten what it should have looked like.

The Room is prepped for tile and that will go in this weekend, I was going to do it my self but tearing out the old vinyl was too hard on my knees and I’m getting a deal on a professional install. The whole project (Materials and Labor) will be half as much as the just materials for going with hardwood.

The cabinetry is coming along nicely; the inside of the stand is painted with white Polyurethane floor paint. All the wood is cut for the door jams and trim and will be installed today. The inside of the hood will get a coat o of the white Polyurethane floor paint this afternoon. The only large project left to do is finish the closet and do the final sanding and finish with a few coats of Polyurethane.

Yesterday I got the trim on the top of the stand installed; it will look like the black granite counter tops in the kitchen.

First I cut the pieces to fit clamped them into place to ensure that the 45 degree cuts fit properly. Next I drilled and countersunk the screws holes glued with the old faithful Gorilla glue and clamped it all together and installed the screws. After the glue dried I removed the excess glue with a razor blade and sanded with 220 grit paper. And applied a coat of Polyurethane and left over night to dry.

This morning I sanded the trim again and applied a coat of black enamel, Ill sand this with some 600 grit sand paper and reapply several coats of the polyurethane, sanding with 600 grit in between coats.

Wow Greg, its looking good. It's really starting to come together. I like the nice clean, white look on the inside of the stand.

Christy,

It should be easier to clean up if need be I hope it holds up and stays nice and clean. It looks good in the pic but up close and personnel it looks like crap (I wish I could paint better) I have to put another coat of paint on it, did I mention that I hate painting. :)

Today was a nice day of no work just about reef stuff. I went to the Tampa Bay Reef Club meeting and picked a few frags at their auction. I got a nice blue Bali stag from Jason (Daddy Jax) and a green Bali stag from Brian (bgdiving) thanks for the frags guys. After the meeting I stopped by Fish and other Itchy Stuff to pick up a few things and to see what looked good, I got a pair of Gueisman Actinic T5 bulbs to replace the Blue+ that I don’t like, a nice large aqua cultured Monti that had a red and a green colony on the same plug. I hope they can cohabitate in piece as they have done so far.

Tomorrow the tile gets installed and the 150 gets a good buffing, things are looking like I might get to water testing by the end of the week.

Sunday morning and all the normal stuff is done. My alkalinity is right on track now that I mixed up the new batch of 2 part.

I’m off to pick up some more Novus 2 and some 2000grit wet dry sandpaper, after that I'll be ready to go and lay the tile down; it is going to be a long day.

Ill get some pics up tonight.

The tile is down it is a good day.

The tile is down it is a good day.

I had a few undocumented reefers come by and help me with the tile job.

Considering my knee and that it hurt for 3 days after scraping up the old vinyl, I was not going to be getting up and down on my knees. I decided that I would get the job of tile cutter, besides it’s my saw.

First I laid out the tile to get the layout of the inlay right and determine how to get the least amounts of cuts, hey it’s my saw and I want to save wear and tear on it. :)
room20.jpg

The guys showed up and we snapped some lines down and they started laying tile and I made the cuts as they needed them. I thought it would be easy but when you have professionals putting it down its hard to get a break from the wet saw. They had a slide cutter but they couldn't get 2 pieces from one tile with it. I only had enough tile to do the job with 5 extra tiles so after seeing their scrap pile I made all the cuts salvaging their scraps with the wet saw. We broke a few tiles and mis cut one I was sweating for a while thinking we didn't have enough tile, we finished without leaving one whole tile and I didn't have to buy another box.

It looks good. Nice pattern on the inlay. Keep the pics coming.

Christy, Thanks.

I should have it finished tonight, Ill get pics up then.

The grout is done and I'm in the middle of the baseboards now. The baseboards remind me of how much I hate painting, Ill save the touch up for some other time.
