Lookin great Greg! I really like the tile background it looks very good in place.I think the frag mote is going to look very cool all filled in. How do those scratches on the tank look now that it's filled with water?
Andrew

Andrew, thanks for the help with the buffing, there are a few scratches that are still noticeable but I don't have much light over the tank now.

It still looks great, and will always get scratches and need to be re-buffed. I think I will get one of those Micromesh kits for buffing with water in the tank.

Yeah I'd like to see how those "micromesh" kits work. Anyway's as I said before coming together very nicely, if you need any help with anything or just want to talk reef you know how to get a hold of me!
P.S. If you can come out Sunday, we play at noon.
Andrew

Andrew,

I would love to come and hear you play, Ill try to make it, if I can get my teenagers up before noon. But since it will be across the street from Aquarium Architecture I'm not sure I will be able to resist the temptation, Ill just have to bring lots of cash. :)

I started draining the fresh water from the 150, the PH has been stable at 8.3 for 2 days so the rock work should be fully cured and while it is empty I will finalize all the plumbing modifications that need to be done.

I have a small seep in the prop tank that needs to be sealed and while it is empty I will modify the raceway for a modified MJ 1200 that will reverse the flow every so often on a wave timer.

I have 60 gallons of fresh saltwater mixing in brutes now. I will fill the display with half fresh saltwater and half saltwater from the 120 and then start adding live rock and live sand from the 120 and the 65 to it.

When the Weldon has set and the mod is complete, I will take 40 gallons of water and the corals from the 65 and place them in the prop tank and drip acclimate the prop tank into the 150s system for minimum shock. The fish will go into the 120 for hypo salinity for at least 6 weeks and the 150 will run fallow.

Wow dude, You're almost there!
I like the "lost city of Atlantis" look.

Mike, Wait till I pack in a few hundred lbs of live rock, a few hundred lbs of live sand and everything is pink & purple.:)

YOu better bring plenty, I talked to chris a couple of days ago and he was getting a shipment in on friday! Save some for me too;)

It’s Sunday and it has been a long one, all the normal stuff on the 65 is done.
The water tests for the 65 are right where I like them, the #s are:

Ca 480
Alk 4.23 meq/l 11.8Dkh
Mg 1400

I haven’t checked the 150 yet, Ill check once the Southdown storm has subsided. I got out the Shopvac and finished getting out the last of the fresh water.

I added about 150lbs of live sand and 100lbs of live rock from the 120 along with the 60 gallons of fresh saltwater and about 60 gals of saltwater from the 120 the visibility was down to zero for a while but it has come up to about 12 inches now.

The ER 12-1 skimmer is pulling out a lot of the dust but it will still need a lot of tuning once things have cleared up. I have changed the filter sock and will change it again before I go to bed.

I dried out the prop tank and in the morning I will seal the suspect seam with some Weldon 16 and drill out the holes in the raceway for my MJ Mod and then let it sit for a day before adding water.

Corey, I'm adjusting the Ca, Alk and Mg now to match the 65, The the corals will go in the frag tank tomorrow or Wednesday and the live rock will go in after that. The fish will stay in the 65 in hypo salinity for several weeks then it will be emptied after the fish are in the 150, unless it is sold then all bets are off.

Yesterday was a long day but I got a lot accomplished. I have changed the socks every 8 hours and it is clearing up real nicely. This is what the tank looked like when I started,
water11.jpg

First I sealed the prop tank, I took some Weldon 3 and dripped it along the front seam and it sucked it up through capillary action in all the voids then I ran a bead of Weldon 16 along the seam, I’m sure it will not leak now.
water10.jpg

Next was the wave maker MJ Mod to the prop tank. I cut 2 pieces of acrylic to fit in the space between the overflow and the race way wall and drilled a hole that would accept the 2” coupling that I used to mod the MJ 1200 and cut some gussets for support. Glued it all up with Weldon 3.
MJMod1.jpg

MJMod2.jpg

Checked to see if it fit into its spot in the prop tank, then I marled the holes in the raceway wall that needed to be drilled.
MJMod3.jpg

I had to hold the Dremel tool in my left hand and backwards while halfway in the stand to cut the holes but they didn’t come out to bad.
MJMod4.jpg

A. D. D. is a biotch! I cant start and finish anything without interruption from the other side of me that sees something bright and shinny and off I go to look at it forgetting what I was doing.

Next I had to finalize the return manifold; it is hard knowing where you want water flow if you don’t have corals in the tank. I have a real good idea of how it is going to lay out and how I would like the flow. I ended up with 2 Lockline nozzles right next to each other in the back left corner so I wanted to remove one, and the thing was leaking allover and needed to be finished being glued.

Since I had the pump turned off and the return all apart, it was a good time to finish the overflow so I cut some egg create and zip tied it in place.
Overflowplumbing6.jpg

Then since I was working on the overflow I needed to cut a few pieces of travertine to finish covering the overflow box, and I wanted to build a live rock column and since I was cutting rock…there’s no time like present.

I picked out a nice piece of base rock and one of my favorite and oldest pieces of live rock and a ½” masonry bit and drilled a hole in each. I cut a piece of ½” PVC pipe and got out my die grinder and got the pipe and rocks to fit together.
water13.jpg

column1.jpg

I have had reefs collapse before from digging fish undermining the rocks, so I use a piece of 4” PVC pipe about 3 to 4 inches tall as a footer that sits squarely on the bottom of the tank and will hold up a piece of base rock just below the sand level.

In and amongst all this I got the last coat of paint on the hood.

The paint on the hood was dry so I moved it inside and installed the light rack. The hood has just become a two man lift so I called a neighbor to come over and help put it in place. I got out the ballasts and got ready for Nate (natec) to come over to lift the monster up on the tank. Nate came over around 9:30 pm (thanks for the help) and we hoisted it up into place. I had some of those nylon furniture slides that fit perfectly under the rails that sit on top of the tank. It moves very nicely now with minimum effort and I can still slide it open by myself.

The hood is in place and all is left to do is plug in the ballasts and see what it looks like. I couldn’t believe it nothing a few more minutes go by and still nothing and then one of the HQI fires, but not the other. I could not believe it I was going to have to take it all off and reseat the bulb, so off it came and I removed the pendant that would not fire, reseated the bulb put it all back together and we lifted it back into place. You would not believe that it didn’t fire, so I turned it off and was just a bout to take it down when I thought I should give it a good whack and try again……success it fired so Nate went back home ane I went back to work on installing the Icecap 660 for the T5s. as things were going they didn’t fire either, I was not having fun and it only gets worse. I swapped some bulbs around and reseated all the bulbs and tested it. This time two bulbs flickered and went out so I knew that those bulbs worked. I swapped some more bulbs around and reseated all the bulbs and tested it again and three bulbs flickered and went out so I knew that those bulbs worked and the one that didn’t flicker was good from the last swap. I changed the end cap on the power side of that bulb and then I moved the bulbs into the order I wanted and reseated all the bulbs and tested it again. Thank god it worked because it was 2:30am and I was going to bed.

Just before going to bed I finally got to do the water tests on the 150 the #s are:

Ca 400
Alk 3.16 meq/l 9Dkh
Mg 1200

The water tests for the 150 are good but not where I like them, and not the same as in the 65 so I made the adjustments and went to bed

This morning the T5s fired right up but the HQI didn’t, the sockets are so loose that just the movements of sliding the hood will unseat the contact.

I got on the phone to Icecap and spoke to Dave in service and he said to send it back so next week the corals will just have to get used to the T5s and when the HQI pendants come back Ill run them for a few hours a day.

This was the first time I removed the pendants from the hood on the tank so now I know it can be done I reseated both bulbs and reinstalled the pendants and they fired up.
water14.jpg

I didn’t get much else done except wiring up the fans and power supply, I changed the filter sock, and cleaned up a little.

The skimmer was still going nuts anytime I did any thing near the tank and flooding the cup and dumping a lot of micro bubbles in the tank. Because the skimmer is not broken in I had to have only the gate valve on with out any other PVC parts or it would overflow the cup. I elevated the skimmer on a piece of egg crate cleaned the cup and readjusted the skimmer and have now got the flow through the stand pipe and over into the sock so it should help with the micro bubbles.

I finally got to do the water tests on the 150 to see how my adjustments worked out the #s are:
Ca 470
Alk 4.3 meq/l 12 Dkh
Mg 1250

The water test for the 150 are good and close to the same as in the 65 but the Mg is still low and I’m out of Epson salts. Ill get some in the morning and make the adjustments then.

Tonight I’m going to bed.

Yesterday was about the sane as it has been all week; nothing is going as smoothly as I had planned.

I built the light rack for the prop tank with the same techniques as for the rack for the display the construction went smooth. The wiring was pretty straight forward but getting it to fire the T5s proved to be a challenge. I still have to mount the fans in the rack and wire them.

At first two bulbs flickered and went out so I knew that those bulbs worked. I swapped some bulbs around and reseated all the bulbs and tested it again and three bulbs flickered and went out so I knew that those bulbs worked and the one that didn’t flicker was good from the last swap. I swapped the end caps on that bulb and three bulbs flickered and went out. I did a continuity test and found a pin in the harness that was not seated so I reseated it and did continuity test all was good. I moved the bulbs into the order I wanted and reseated all the bulbs and tested it again, two bulbs flickered and went out. I’m thinking what the heck is going on, I know the bulbs are good and there is continuity through out the system, the only thing I hadn’t tested was the ballast. I swapped the ballasts from the prop tank and the display (OMG I have light) then I looked up and there was nothing over the display turned it off and then back on and two bulbs flickered and went out. I can’t believe a bran new ballast was bad. I just took it out of the box. I took the ballast out of the 65 and swapped it with the one from the display and two bulbs flickered and went out, but the display looked great.

I had been at this electrical nightmare for 4 hours now and was going to bed, and I still have to mount the ballasts build a switch box for the IC 660 ballasts and tidy up the cords……( big sigh)…..deep cleansing breath.

This morning I moved some plumbing so the rack would fit over the prop tank, and hung the lights with some cup hooks and chain and mixed up some fresh saltwater

I tested the 6’ light extension harness I built, it was a little scary at first with all the fun I have been having with the lighting. I plugged in the extension harness to both of the ballasts and then to the harness at both light racks, rewired the power cords to the extension harness and plugged the ballasts. I turned on the first switch and the actinics came on just like they were designed to (2 over the display and 2 over the prop tank) then I turned on the 2nd switch and the 10k came on like they should (2 over the display and 2 over the prop tank).

Pics to come later I gotta run and get some Rubbermaid’s and other stuff to make the swap this evening.

Wow Greg!

Its really coming along. I can't wait to see it when its finished.

I feel your pain. Jeff and I have spent ALL day in the tank attempting to get humpty dumpty put back together again. We are about 3/4 of the way thru the aquascaping at this point. :mixed:

Christy, You don't know how bad its been........I haven't gotten to bed before 3:30 this week and up at it at 7:30 everyday, and I still have pics from 3 days ago to post.

I lost the Skunks to Ich while I was busy with the 150 and didn't notice until it was to late (they were really stressed from the Ocellaris and the move to the prop tank) all of a sudden they were covered in spots. I started to treat what I could hoping I could get the corals out and drop the salinity for them.

The 150 is up and stocked at about 75% and the rest of the corals are still in the 150s prop tank. The fish are still in the 65 at a SG of 1.020 and Ill drop it an other few points tomorrow.

I had a party to Christen and Aquascape the 150 this evening, everyone was having so much fun we didn't get all the corals in the tank. It was a great time, I think we all enjoyed the company and activities.

I just got some of the coolest stuff from Aquarium Architecure this week, lets just say some of it was some of the stuff that was at the top of my list for now. They have to have the best live stock that I have seen on this continent so far, I am not a fish person and I am amazed at the fish they carry. I have several fish on hold right now and will move them straight into QT before this weekend is over.

Ill update the list and post pics when I have slept.

Yeah, we've been doing the 2 a.m. bedtime thing all week. Breaking down the tank to get the fridmani was the biggest bee-atch. Then, just when we thought things were smooth sailing, our purple tang died in QT last night. He had been looking a little off his color, so we knew he was stressed, but he was still eating like a pig so I wasn't worried. At 3 p.m. yesterday he was eating nori out of my hand, and by 8:00 he was dead. Very strange. I guess the whole transfer and round of hypo was just too much for him. :( The rest of the fish are looking good, at least. I am just really surprised, I figured if we lost a fish from stress it would be the powder blue and not the purple. But, what can you do?

We are going to have to plan a weekend trip over your way to check out that shop. It sounds awesome.

We still have our skunk pair in QT. They are through hypo now, and I still haven't decided if I am going to put them in the display with the percularis pair or if they will be ok in my nano. How do you think they'd do in a nano? If they aren't going to be happy in the nano, I will probably have to find them a good home.

Christy, I think if they are ok together in QT they should be fine in the display. If they have an anemone to host they wont stray far so I think they would do fine in a nano my only concern would be water volume with that much bioload.
